I Have vw 1200 engine and recently checked the serial numbers, which are A4226461 and my shop manual said it was a 1200 (36hp). It also said not to many of them are left. Does this make it more valuable? any info would be appreciated.

It is worth saving for someone doing a restoration. As for worth it is what the market will bear. People used to give them to me when cleaning out thier garages.

People tend to rag on the 36 hps. They do not go fast. They were the old put it to the floor and wait for it to rev up. They are a very dependable engine and great for mpg. You can gve me one any day of the week!

Where did you find "A" as a 36hp engine? That is not a typical 36hp engine number. 36hp engines have no letter prefix and 4226461 is higher than the last number used for 36hp engines in 1960.

my VW beetle 61-79 shop manual said " vw 1200 (36 hp)
this engine is used on all 1954-1960 vw's. serial numbers run up to 5,000,000 on these A series engines. Not to many of them are left." I could be mistaken. I'll post pics of the engine tommorrow morning. Id like to find what I have so I can attempt to rebuild it.

A 36-horse will have a generator stand that is integrated into the case, whereas the later 40-horse and 1300/1500/1600 engines have a removable generator stand. Pictures from the Engine Guide thread:

No worries. If in good condition, AH is actually a good dual relief case for a performance rebuild. Smile

cool, she starts up first turn of the key after sitting in a garage for two years. I just want to make sure it'll stay a runner.
