is there any reason why I shouldn't put the fuel filter in the engine compartment?
I have a Cali model GL with a big round metal filter, I have the square plastic replacements, I am thinking of running a new fuel line all the way from the pump to the t-junction with the filter up there for accessibility.
(and the bracket won't acommadate it under the floor aft of the pump.) _________________ Tencentlife said,

A quick note if I read you post right...
The small square plastic filter is for: after the tank, before the pump - i.e. Low Pressure
The large round metal filter is for: after the pump, before the engine - i.e. High Pressure
I'm not sure I'd trust that little filter on the high pressure side, especially in my engine compartment _________________ "The floggings will continue until morale improves"

I don't see any filter between the tank and the pump.
Maybe that's why my van doesn't run so well. _________________ Tencentlife said,

SO THANKS WESTY MAN,
I went and got a metal filter which will fit the bracket so forget the the idea.
I still kinda like it though. _________________ Tencentlife said,

it is common to mount fuel filters in engine compartments of cars - after all, the fuel lines are in there
If you do, I'd look in to using a Racor which will filter and also act as a fuel and water separator. |

Gordy,
I like the idea too, my reason would be that if there is any water in the gas/tank it seems to tend to crystalize and freeze up in the very exposed filter, I think the heat from the engine would help this problem if you could find a safe place to put it? |

many of us that use the Subaru engines have eliminated the post pump stock round filter and just used the subaru filter which is mounted in the engine bay. nice thing about this set up is:
A. ease of replacment - you don't have to crawl under the vanagon
B. You don't spill gas all over everytime you replace it
C. cheap, very common filter
The filter itself is a round metal canister with the inlet and outlet on the top, and there is a bracket that you mount to the sheet metal which the filter slides in and out of.
check online for a subaru legacy filter for a '92 to '94.

How often do you guys change fuel filters? Once every couple years?
It seems it would be a lot more worthwhile to relocate the oil filter. That I actually do often. _________________ 89 Westy 2.1 Auto |

You gotta love some of the new car designs where the oil filter is up high and they suction out the oil from the dip stick. No need to ever crawl under the car for maintenance. _________________ 89 Westy 2.1 Auto |

I got one of the suction devices to use on my Jetta, and it turns out to work really nicely on a stock WBX. |

I mounted a Subaru fuel filter in the engine compartment on the last conversion I did. It fits in there very nicely with the Vanaru cooling layout. Since the filter is mounted very close to the coolant expansion tank, I installed a piece of the stock muffler heat shield on the filter bracket, between the heat & the filter.
So far, so good.
