My Vanagon is in need of a new muffler and I was just curious if anyone has used one from another vehicle.
Thanks in advance!

Someone just posted about a good deal available on mufflers, in the last day or two.

I did see that. However, I was just curious if anyone has used a muffler not designed specifically for a Vanagon.

I bought a van with an aftermarket rectangular type muffler. It hung down and looked funny, plus the supports had to be customized. It costs a few more dollars for stock, but I think it's worth it.

It doesn't look bad in this particular picture, but it wasn't pretty.

You certainly could if you don't have to worry about a visual. I think on a 2.1 I would want to stick to something very close to the original as the stock set up is pretty good. You can get most of the parts in stainless from companies that do Subaru conversions.

If you have a 1.9 the set up was not as nice as a 2.1 and as far as I am concerned anything that works and will give dependable service is at least or better than stock. I have a glass pack on my 83 1/2 and it seems to work fine.

When 1/2 way thru my recent 4000 mile trip I had to replace my muffler in Pensacola. No choice. I was fortunate the Muffler shop sent me off to an experienced vintage VW shop to make an adapter and then went back to the Muffler shop and they welded on a new muffler that they had to adjust. Don''t think that its any lower, its up nice and tight and the price was really good (compared to what I would have paid in Cd)

Shortly thereafter I made the decision to head back to Cd. I was tired of paying money to be cold. Came home and stayed cold. It was a good decision as Houston had a snowstorm the day after I left there and South Miami Beach was only in the 40's and that was F not C.

I just bought a muffler intended for a mid 80's Ford F150. I have not had a chance to mount it yet (I'm waiting for flanges to weld on). It is 26" long and 6" in diameter, so it should fit just fine. I bought it because, A: it was not expensive and B: because I have a Subaru 2.2L and this muffler should be free flowing since it was designed for a 5.9L engine.

I Have.. I cobbled a muffler together from NAPA, I had the end that attached to the Cat, and walked into NAPA told em it was for a 91 vanagon 2.1.

Came out with a walker magnaflow, some clamps, and some stainless steel ribbon to hang it with.. cost.. 51.00

Worked out till I could find a real one in a used yard.. kinda loud.. lots of free flow performance.

That one is free for the taking. Up here in Amesbury, Ma..

That's awesome!
I think I might try that out before I spend $60 on a new one!

Cherry Bomb glass pack with some stock exhaust flanges welded to the ends of it works very well, and you'll know the engine running.

Cost?

Maybe if you shop a little $20 bucks.

Thanks for the info. It's currently just straight piped, so I'm looking for something that will quiet it down some.

I have had that same Ford F-150 muffler on one of my 1.9s for over five years now. Sounds good, fits nicely and was cheap.
