Is the headlight switch supposed to illuminate. I know there is a small bulb and socket in the switch in my 92 cabriolet that illuminates the light switch when the ignition is turned on. When I had the instrument panel out yesterday I noticed there was a place for the bulb and bulb holder in the switch but they were not there. Sad I looked around and did not see any unattached wires. I am in the process of fixing the light in the fan indicators and was going to order a bulb and holder for the headlight switch if it could be illuminated.

Vanagon headlight switches aren't lit from the factory. If you look into the back of the switch you will notice that there isn't a way for the icon to be illuminated. They can be modded though.

Here is a writeup I did to mod the switch. You need to harvest the bulb connector from another car, get a different switch and do some very minor wiring. It is one of my favorite mods, especially after a long drive and the eyes are too tired to see in the dark for the switch.

we do a similiar mod with the campers in our family,
use a colored LED hooked to constant +12v, makes the switch very easy to spot in the dark when I want to only hit the lights
