Do any of the wires from that diagnostic socket in the engine compartment go to the front of the Bus?
Mine is a '72
If so which ones? There's like nothing on the wiring diagram about where those wires go. |

The 3 prong plug going from the back of the case? Doesn't go anywhere, obsolete VW diagnostic plug. _________________ 1978 Transporter, 2.0L FI |

No not that one. The 20 or so pin diagnostic socket above the battery.
I'll try to find a pic. |

Sounds like an FI computer plug.
Is it that one? _________________ 1978 Transporter, 2.0L FI |

goes to different places. It allowed them to test light bulbs, battery cells - all sorts of things quickly. Funny thing is we took our 1971 Deluxe to a big local So Cal dealer (EconoMotors in Riverside who was the original EMPI) in 1976 and asked them to test it - even then they had trouble finding the harnesses and someone who could run their computer. The whole thing was a joke even then - but I wouldn't remove it unless it bothers you because some day some buyer will say - Oh, I'd pay you more but the thingy is missing... _________________

Hmmm, I did not notice that my bus had any sort of diagnostic plug. If it's supposed to be activated by VW specialists at the dealer, it wouldn't plug into anything. The way the web page describes it makes me think that it doesn't plug into anything but a computer at the dealership. _________________ 1978 Transporter, 2.0L FI |

| I was thinking I could run a signal wire for my oil temp and pressure senders if the wires go to the front of the bus. I've heard from people in the past using those wires for instrumentation but maybe it was just on Beetles. |

I've heard of it too but it is so easy to run wires under a bus. _________________

| There is one wire that does. It's the diagnostic wire for the rear window defroster. It connects to the switch and not the defroster on the glass. I believe it's a blue wire with a white stripe (but don't quote me on it.) I plan on using mine for a tach lead, although I have a ton of extra wires to run. It goes to terminal 5 on the diagnostic plug. Check your bentley diagram and use a multimeter to confirm the wire. |

Yes there are a few wires that go all the way to the front, look at the diagram for the circuits with a short branch coming off that ends in a orange dot with a number in it. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

| Just checked the bentley for the 72 model. Looks like there are no extras running to the front. |

| Yeah I was looking at that too. I don't see any orange numbers on that part of the car. |

There is a brown wire with white that comes from the harness that has the blue oil pressure wire and the wire to the coil. I'm going to use it for oil temp.

That's the booster fan control wire.
I'll try to look at a harness today. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I just looked at a 73 and there's 2 wires to the front, blue/white and grey, the harness was hacked at the fusebox so I couldn't see where they went further forward from there. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

| 72 harness is different than 73. It doesn't have as many diagnostic wires. |
