Looking for measurements and/or drawings of roll bar. Would like to use the screws that the seat belt hooks use for the front mounting and not sure on the rear. Also it would have to work with the factory soft top. _________________ 73 THING

| Check out Punchdrunk Monkey build. He has a really nice, and well thought out roll bar. I think I will go with that style for mine. |

here are a couple of mine
used photos here from Samba.
dimension just went with it.
probably would do a little different instead of the 3 hoops that I did. If do long runs down length of vehicle, it does not give you potential head clearance issues.
Mine will fit under Thing Shop bikini top. only issue is rear hoop was a little too wide and interferes with top rear hoop. I would think regular top would work. may do some different lean in back than how I did.
note center hoop has a angle iron bracket that uses bolt holes on front and rear door divider. it was bolted in place and then tacked to cage hoop.
early design stages, have top available while setting up cage designliatg

1st 2 pics are rear seat mounts
side mounts between doors
front feet mount on pan
center mount with front seat belt attachment points.
side overall look from front drivers corner
I used 3/16 plates for mounts and used back up plate on underside.
no intentions of offroad machine, just the look. should be plenty strong. 1 1/2 tubing.
hope this helps |

man that helps alot. I love the look but I think on mine I will leave off the front portion. Does your top work with that set up? _________________ 73 THING

63ziggy,
That's the one best setups I've seen. Specifically, I like what you did with the 2 point seatbealt arrangement as well as the rocker and mid piller reenforcements. The rear passenger grab bars are also a nice addition.
I do think it should be tweeked so a standard soft top would fit (but I live in the Pacific Northwest where it's a bit "moister". What's your feeling on adding an athwartships crossbar on the middle bar for the rear passengers to grab on. Would have to be designed to take the rearest travel for the front seats into account. |

Thanks for the great compliments. borrowed a couple ideals here and there from The Samba members and then added a couple.
I thought about the cross bar behind front seats as well as possibly one parallel with dash.
I know it has been done. I had not realized the small area in the back seat once I put in the front seats and set them up for basic leg room. seemed tight and decided not to have something to bang knees into. all really opinion. it would definitely add some side to side strength ever got a dreaded t-bone accident.
it would not take much to work around a soft top. just have in place when pulling measurements and mocking up
this was my first try at bending as well as a cage. I am pleased with the way it came out. I did measure twice if not three times before cuts and bends. I was suggest having a notcher available. I cut my notches with cutoff wheels on grinder. takes time and manipulation for notches.
thanks again |

Thanks Locky!
I never posted to many pictures of mine here due to "it shouldn't be here, it should be in the off-road section". Now that my gripe is over......My cage was not built to incorporate at top and I don't have stock seat belts. But here are a few pictures that might help with ideas.
The start of the main cage
Lower door bracing
Front area before dash
Power steering and rack mount
Front bumper
Rear bumper
Upper shock mounts
Front radiator mount and front shock mounts
Cage removed for final welding and painting
Dash
Profile before rear fenders were made
With rear fenders. |
