I'm trying to get an identification for a 1965 panel van. The m plate says it's 49 bottom and top but I can't see that number on the paint code page anywhere. Can anyone help as I'm hoping to return it back to how it left the factory. Thanks!

I don't recognize 49 either.

Can you post the numbers from the plate? All of them...

27D

SN 2132 494983 6080392

So as far as I can gather it's a '66 model made on December 27th 1965. It was fitted with equipment for Sweden (Erbespacher gas heater) and had to be prepared for Swiss license requirements. Destined for Sweden North. A LHD with cargo doors on the left. Nitro-lacquer finish. Mesh grey upholstery.

I found a website that listed 49 as a primer paint code for bay window buses. Could this be the case?

Also, one of the M codes for Swedish equipment says it has seating for 9 people (double cargo doors). Mine's a panel van so that doesn't seem right to have seating in the back but no windows. A bit sinister?!

Thanks!

Does it have seat hold-down plates on the floor?

Ignoring the seating thing, does it have cargo doors on both side or just the left?

No idea on 49 but neat... start checking up under the dash or under whatever paint is on it now. Any photos?

Unfortunately at some point during it's life in Sweden it had the front indicators, vw ensignia and all the handles removed and welded over. It sported the US spec light units with the side lights as indicators. It was totally resprayed in a peach colour. I guess another victim of the 80/90's Euro look. The owner before me then resprayed it grey and fitted a custom interior with a vision to make it like a surf diner but on a serious low budget. A couple of years ago it hit by a van whose brakes failed on a hill. The end result was I had to replace the front bottom half so had a panel welded that meant I could reinstate the original indicators and headlights as well as the vw sign. There's very little that

The cargo doors are just on the left.

I have removed the interior in places and the only overspray i've noticed is red oxide primer. Does anyone know what primer Wolfsburg would have used?

I haven't seen any seat mount plates as it's covered in carpet and wood.

I'll have a proper check tomorrow up under the dash and inside. I haven't thought about the rear torsion caps.

Thanks!

Dropgates says the 49 paint code is primer for '64-'67 models

Thanks for the confirmation dstefun.

It just so happened I found www.vw-mplate.com this morning and got this...

It confirms 49 as primer too. I suppose I can paint it any colour... Once I've sorted the metal first!!

Cheers everybody for the help.

I thought primer was 29? That's what I have on the site but I got it from a VW Bus book I have. Let me know if you are sure and I will update the site.
