So many of the original zwitter dome lights I see have damage to them, which raises the question, how do you remove them? There seems to be no spring clips like the later versions, is it more a friction fit?

There are two little spring loaded points just under the lip. You just have to grab the unit with your hands (fingernails) or if your daring some thin putty knife like object and pull it out. And lucky you zwitter dome lights are more rare than an honest politician, so don't break it or you will have sell one of your kids to get another one.

The first show I took my fresh out of moth balls zwitter to, I had someone try to buy the dome light out of it. The guy said "I'll give you $250 for it." I told him I was still using it. _________________ I will never lie, but sometimes the truth changes.

It's more of a friction fit but like mentioned before, the little tabs help to keep in in place. Just be very gentle when prying it loose. So many of them are broken or they are "bubbled" out due to someone using the wrong watt bulb and melting the lens.
I found mine for $100 and felt it was one of the best vw deals I have ever received. Definately one of he most sought after, rare and hard to find parts for any early vdub.
