I have 2 inoperative baywindow KMH trip odometers lying around that I would like to get back on the road. All that seems to be wrong with them is a cracked drive gear (the one that interacts with the drive worm). This seems to be a standard problem. Any ideas where to buy a replacement?? _________________ Westfalia Helsinki 6/77

You will need to look up a speedometer repair shop in your country.
In the U.S. there are countless speedometer shops that repair VDO equipment.
The gears are readily available here and also should be in your country . _________________ V.W.owner since 1967 |

Thanks mate, but the World has gone global in the meantime and samba is a pretty international site . I would be surprised, if there wouldn't be anybody with an idea where to get these. It really isn't important whether the company is in "my" country or any other country in the World , as long as they supply this particular gear for baywindow KMH odometers.
A company called germansupply.com or something like that used to have them (think its US based), both for MPH and KMH, but they are out of stock.
If you know a supplier for these particular gears, please let us know.... _________________ Westfalia Helsinki 6/77

I have purchased gears from http://www.odometergears.com/products/Volkswagen/Mechanical+Speedometer/19. They fit tight on the shaft and work very well. _________________ Present:

Would that one be the right one, I wonder?... VW mechnical gears with 17 teeth? Quite a price for a single gear .
Paspeedo doesn't seem to have 17 teeth gears for vw _________________ Westfalia Helsinki 6/77

Guess I might do just that , or send a mail with some pics of the gear that I need first. But they look pretty right indeed
Here we go again - another pay-once-cry-once situation. As long as they fit and fit tight around the axle, its probably money well spent _________________ Westfalia Helsinki 6/77

I have purchased both the spur gear and the lead gear from Odometer Gears. Both work perfectly as advertised.
Sure $25 seems a lot for such a small piece, but you paying for the engineering and production costs, not the materials.
And just compare that $25 to what you would pay a professional speedometer repair shop. It's a bargain. _________________ Present:

Fair enough, I will try to look at it as a bargain . The prospect of having these trip speedos working again will soothe the pain _________________ Westfalia Helsinki 6/77

Also, if you wouldn't mind me borrowing your broken gear, I'd be happy to measure and 3D model it, and 3D print you an extra. My 3D printed 11-tooth gear has been working well in my '74 MPH trip meter speedo for thousands of miles now.
Let me know and thanks in advance!

No worries Doug, I send the cracked original one to you. Sounds like a great idea. Just send a PM with your address _________________ Westfalia Helsinki 6/77

| With mine, which was only cracked on one side I just popped it off, applied super glue, let it cure and then put it back. Has been going fine for a few years and thousands of miles now. |

I have glued mine once, but it cracked again . I have another trip speedo that is missing the gear altogether and a third one which is glued once and hasn't yet cracked again. I guessI 'd better buy 3 then... _________________ Westfalia Helsinki 6/77
