Credit to Wildthings with posing this possibility.

To mitigate damage due to a seal failure between the auto trans and the rear diff, it was posed by Wildthings that running a GL4 rated ATF in the rear diff could be a possibility. That way a seal failure would just mean ATF mixing with ATF. I'm getting ready to change the diff gear oil and have been giving this more pondering.

Redline D4 ATF is Dexron compatible and is also GL4 rated. I'll probably shoot Redline a call or email Monday and see if in fact running the D4 ATF in the Vanagon auto rear diff is a viable option.

Anyone here have $0.02 to throw in on the idea?

Hmmm...nobody has any spare change to throw in Laughing

So I sent this idea to Daryl at AA Transaxle. He felt the D4 fluid would be a good upgrade for the automatic section, however he recommended sticking with a good GL5 gear oil for the final drive, especially to keep the ring & pinion happy.

So it looks like I'll probably go with Mobil Synthetic gear oil and plan on doing a preventive trans/diff reseal next year.

We used 90 weight gear oil, I think it was, a couple weeks ago in mine.

The Bentley does say to use ATF but that just didn't seem right to us. And gear oil definitely came out of there when we drained it.
