I know this engine has been talked about to death, but like everyone else I'm curious to hear what everyone has to say about my engine combo.
keep in mind i haven't bought any of this stuff yet and i am open to suggestions on how i would get the most out of it. thanks in advance!
-AS41 case
-CB 76mm crank
-CB H-beam rods 5.325" with A pistons (or I could go B's with longer rods, any suggestions about this would be awesome!)
-Steve Tim's stage 1 (40x35) with match ported manifolds (i also like the CB 044 round ports which cost about the same)
-Dual Weber 40idf's with 34vents
-Bosch 019 dist. (I have one)
-1.5" extractors with a huge 3 bolt flange and a quiet pack (have this also)
I cant decide on a cam, i like the Engle fk7 with 1.4 rockers
the fk7 has 288 duration/244 at half lift .357" lift at the cam and .500" with 1.4's
with 55cc chambers i would need a deck height of .037 to get a 9:1 CR,
this is subject to change depending on the rod length and shims. I want the engine to be as close to stock width as possible.

It all sounds nice.
I would go vw heads over the 044 (heard of longgevity probs with them)
The fk-7 sounds like a nice cam that will retain a lot of bottom end TQ, nice daily driver, but still some good top end.
If your super carfull on your build you can go down to 0.040 on the deck, any lower and you risk valves hitting piston crowns.
I would go more up to 0.060 on the deck and to around 8.5-1

I would go 78mm crank, stock length I beam rods, and B pistons. You won't need any shims and may need to shorten the cylinders to get the deck height. I would use 8.0:1 with the FK-7 cam. yeah i was really considering the 78mm crank, it will just cost a little more and a little clearance work. I hear the 78 with 5.5" rods and B pistons is "perfect"
With chevy journals and H beams can i fit it in with little or no clearance work? _________________ 71 Super

Please forgive the "newbie" question....

Clearancing will be required for a 78mm crank. No need to go Chevy rods on a 78 because there is plenty of room between the rods and cam. I like the H beams because they make them in different sizes and they are lighter, but they are more expensive.
can the clearancing for a 78 be done with a dremmel or something similar? _________________ 71 Super

Clearancing for a 78mm crank can be done by hand if you are experienced with the tools you are using. It would be real easy for a novice to clearance too much by hand and ruin the case. UPDATE: the engine will be a 1955, I have done a TON of research and acquired some heads and a case. This is going into my daily driven 68.
Case: stock AH bored to 90.5 and align bored
Crank: CB 76mm
Rods: CB 5.5 I beams
P/C: 90.5 B's
Cam: Engle w100 or similar
Lifters: stock ones from CB, aluminum pushrods, stock 1.1 rockers
Heads: Ported 35x32 with 52cc chambers and heavy single springs
8.3ish Compression
40 idf webers, bosch 019, 1-3/8 merged header with heater boxes.

Why pick a head with those size valves,pick heads with 40x35.5 your engine will like it with the carbs and cam  |

its a daily driver with an engle 100... that thing will be out of steam by 5000rpm stock valves with a PP should so just fine _________________ Brian

I think you will be disappointed with power output with the stock valves and the super small cam. It may feel strong down low but the rest is gonna be....blah
I've had my motor (1955cc) with a few variations of exhaust, heads, carbs ect....and the combo with the most torque seemed to be with ported 40x35.5 heads, 1 3/8" header with heaterboxes and 40 IDF's with 32 vents...with a W120. It was super nice and smooth to drive, just lacked the "fun" I was looking for So I "upgraded" it lol |

I second the 40x35.5 valved heads, I would also recommend steve and greg tims to port them (since you want performance), they ported my 044's and i love them! I would also bump up that cam to an engle 120. Thats what I use and I love it, its very streetable in that combo as a daily driver.

Thanks alot for the feedback! I dont intend for this to be a race engine, just a little more fun than my 1600 without breaking my wallet. (my wallet is already being broken from my super beetle project)

I already have the heads, I dont think the added performance of big valve heads will make up for their $500+ pricetag (on this engine anyway).
As for the cam, I need one that works with 1.1 rockers, would a 110 be a better choice? _________________ 71 Super

I done this combo a hundred times, here's the combo for "street" and "daily driver" without killing the budget. This combo in some of Glenn's words is Fast-Affordable-Reliable, pick all three.
Your listed combo will come up short on expectations with that wimpy little stroke, and really nothing in terms of heads. 78mm is where things start to really come to life, and a 40 x 35.5 valve combo in a hand worked set of heads is what it takes to make a stroker breathe.
Shoot for 8.8:1 give or take a little on the compression ratio, and run 91 octane fuel.
Case- up to you, I only use new these days
Cam-Engle W-120
Lifters-CB racing
Crank-CB 78mm super race
Rods-CB Unit-Tech Performance
Pistons-Mahle with teflon pin buttons, Mahle rings
Heads- www.headflowmaster.com stage 2 with dual springs
Rockers-Stock 1.1:1 with solid shafts and elephant feet adjusters
Push rods-CB (Manton) chromoly .035" wall
Carbs-dual 44 Weber IDF's match ported manifolds
Exhaust- Stock heater boxes, 1 1/2" header to a good high flow muffler. (A-1 is the best IMO, you get what you pay for here, CB has some nice stuff too) |
