What year/month was the fuel gauge introduced to the Type 1? The bug I just purchased is registered as a 61 and it has a a fuel gauge. the VIN on the chassis and plate behind the spare match and it puts it being a Jan/Feb 61 car.
Thanks

The VIN is 3630286 and our host VIN lookup states Jan 61 3628283 and Feb 61 3701251. According to that my is closer to Jan than Feb.
What month, say in 61, did the models roll off as 62 models?
Thanks

That would be September of 61 for the 62 model year in the deluxe type 113

Interesting - I guess someone might have changed out the fuel tank and added the fuel gauge. I have not checked to see if it has the mounting for the shoulder harness, which I assume was introduced in 62.
Thanks

I think you're on the right track here. Because of the modular nature of the bug dashboard, it would probably take an hour to do the whole set up.
Look at the back of your gas gauge, it should be stamped with a date in black ink (Sometimes it's hidden under lock-in bridge). In my 66, the gauge is two months older than the car. _________________ Rebuilt to drive not decorate. -VOLKSWAGNUT

I think the fuel tank changed size when the fuel gage was added |

nah, the 61 gas tank is the same size/shape as the the 62-67 tanks, but it doesn't have a cut-out for the fuel gauge sender. Fuel gauges started on July 31, 1961 at vin number 4010995, which is the beginning of the 62 model year.
Sounds like somebody just added a gauge to your car somewhere down the road in it's life. do you still have the reserve lever (or the hole where the lever would be) in the front fire wall? _________________ Eric - 1966 camper bus

The fuel tank was changed the year before (61) and that tank plus the ones in the standard models at least through 66 have the reserve tap. The top of the tank is the same as the 62 and above deluxe except there is a depression where the sending unit normally goes.

I just bought the car and have not had a chance to crawl all over it yet. there's not a fuel shut off lever instead some kind of bolt. |

Mystery solved. Pull the gauge and the year stamped on it is '63 and it is mechanical. I did notice though that in 60-61 the fuel gauge was an option. |

Ok I just started to tear the car down. When I removed the "grill" panel with the fuel gauge I noticed that the sub-panel dash has a "factory" type cut-out for the gauge.
Did the '61 models have this cut-out in the sub-panel?

Yes, they did. Although at the time a different version of VDO gas gauge was available to fill the spot. It was round and electric, with an electric sending unit, like the standard type 2 version. A VDO clock was also a popular item to install there, and it had the same shape as the mechanical gas gauges introduced later. _________________ 1965 Deluxe Beetle "Camilla"

VW also had squre accessory electric fuel gauges to fit there as well! I know, I put one in my 62 at one point - and found the body was not cut to fit it - those accessory gauges have "ears" either side that require the opening in the body to match, and in 62 they don't have it. In 61 they did. I had to cut the body on my 62 to make mine fit.
VDO/VW had round and square accessories to fit that hole - examples:

And then there was the VW tech bulleting that had them installing the round fuel gauge here:

That's the cutout it has - square with two, half circle cutouts on either side.
Thanks
