i have a 1973 VW bug... it is in ok condition, but i am not a big fan of it lately. i have seen many great kits for VW's and i am planning on striping my down to the pan before it's rebuild anyway. i have been looking unsuccessfully for a place where i could buy either a new kit or each piece individually as my budget allows on this project. i want a convertable is really the only preference i have so far

Actually, not too many out there for VW pans anymore except for buggy bodies. Any unbuilt kits that you may find (i.e. Gazelle, etc) may not have all the pieces and, being out of production for years, you'll have to be a bit creative when it comes to replacing parts. Troll your local Craigslist and the classifieds here for projects.

Best shortened pan (2 seat) body:
http://www.meyersmanx.com/kick-out-manx-ss.shtml

Best full size pan (4 seat) body:
http://www.meyersmanx.com/manxter2+2.shtml

Of course, 'best' is just IMHO.

Speedster kits are still available, as well as unbuilt Speedster kits that pop up on CraigsList or EBAY.

Bradley's without doors are close to convertables...and are real cheap.

Gazelle and MG replica's are also very available by trolling those same places.

Occasionally a Riot kit comes up (I think there is one on Craigslist now)

It really depends on what your looking for.

...of course, nevermind that they are also the most expensive by leaps and bounds.... But that is a fact.

Yes, quality does cost money, that's nothing new.

As Iversen20 said, there are non-VW kits out there that could fit on a VW pan with modification. The Austin-Healey, Cobra and Jaguar XK120 kit bodies could be adapted to a VW pan, and there were even VW-based XK120 and Healey kits in the 80s. There was a VW-based Cobra project here on TheSamba at one time, but it was in Eastern Europe IIRC and has been sold.

There are a few kits without chassis in the Samba Classifieds that might work for you, such as:

Bradley GT body only, $150, Simi Valley, CA.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=913380

Classic VW-based kit, Fiberfab Aztec GT, $350, San Diego, CA.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=991141

Jaguar SS100 kit car, never built, still in boxes, $2750 obo, Philadelphia
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=789171
(that's a roadster with a top, may be your best bet considering body style and condition)

Take a look at this link...

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=990821

If that body style sparks an interest for you, there was one of these Astra GT bodies for sale in Deland FL. I think he was asking $300 or so. It had been listed here on The Samba and it was on Craigslist but I can't find it now.

It may have sold but I doubt it. If you want I'll see if I can chase down the seller for you.

I kind of wanted to buy it for "future use" but if I had my wife would have had me out looking for a "future home". I'm up to my eyes in projects.

Here's an inexpensive body looking for a VW pan.

Keep checking eBay every day. They keep popping up all the time.
