Guys,
I have an early aluminum VW case which came in a part box with a 356 I purchased. Am I correct in interpreting the Samba VIN page that this is a Mar 1950 engine? It also came with a crankshaft mounted fan which I thought unusual. Not sure if the fan goes with this engine or not. Note the nice case match stamp (#1). Any ideas what I have?

The casting information can be interpreted here:
29 = day
3 = month
10 = year (1st shift) 1950
0 = 1950, 1 = 1951, 2 = 1952, 3 = 1953, 4 = 1954, 5 = 1955, etc
It appears by the number to be a very early bus case (April 1950)
There should be a pair of numbers on the top near the front flange seam that match indicating the halves belong together.
The KD 299489 on the oil filler neck make me thing it was reconditioned at some point. What is the diameter of the cylinder openings? |

Thanks for the info. There is a case half matching number, although it's a little difficult to see in the photo. It's simply "1". |

I have a engine stamped 4 - 7 - 20.
4 = day
7 = month
20 = year
Is 2 for second shift and 0 for 1950 ? What means shift ?

a "shift" is the 8 or so hour period of a 24 hour day that the case was casted. Many manufacturing, healthcare, etc. industries have 1, 2, or 3 "shifts" in a workday. |

Pardon my ignorance, but what is the rusty fitting on the generator stand? Breather?
And please post a picture of the crank mounted fan. |

The fitting is probably for the 356 full flow oil filter, correct?
I've seen a few original 356 cases with a hole there. |
356 two piece cases (prior to late '54) have the fitting there for the oil filter return line (sorry, they only had a bypass filter, not full flow). If VW didn't do this, then it looks like someone used this case for a 356 at one time.
Is this case a particularly rare item or ho hum? |
