I've got a rev limiting rotor in my 72 bus but am getting confused about what direction is "front" of the rotor.
I'm getting ready to statically time the engine, and i will need to point the rotor towards the notch in the distributor, and i want to make sure it is done properly. Maybe i've just looked at this all too long but the rev limit rotors have so many twists and turns its gotten confusing.
In the "conventional" distributor rotors ive usually seen, there is a notch in the front of the rotor that you point towrads the notch in the distributor. Image below.
What portion of the rev limiting rotor would be pointed towards this notch in the distributor?

The black circle is the part that goes front. it transfers the spark to the lugs in the cap and on to the spark plugs,
The red and green circles are the rev limit portion of the rotor. At the specified RPM the spring loaded contact under the red circle is flung by centrifugal force into the loop in the green circle shorting out the ignition and limiting the engines RPM's. |

Rotors only go on one way. If you flip it over and look under it you will see a little notch. That notch lines up with the top of the distributor when you press it onto the shaft. _________________ www.vwnos.com [email protected]

Thank you all for the replies. I'm clear now.
Agreed, i know of the notch and it sitting one way, just still wasn't sure if somehow the location of spark changes.
Sodbusters explanation cleared that up nicely though.
Much appreciated! |

All VW distributors have the notch in relation to the end of the rotor in the same place. If it wasn't in the same location your firing order would change.
You can visualize this by setting your engine to TDC. Then you can ask yourself what would happen if the rotor was pointing to #4 cylinder instead of #1? In this case it would be 90 degrees off. _________________ www.vwnos.com [email protected]
