portable propane grills

I like to BBQ. I have a cheapy propane bbq I got from a yard sale for a few bucks and the flame isn't consistent and always blows out. I am wondering who has a "nice" portable propane grill set up. I want to stay propane, so I can hook it up to the tank and not tote around charcoal. post some pics to if you have them. Nothing better than bbq'd food.

I have a Magma Grill and mounted on the rear passenger quarter panel. Stows under bench while in transit. Do a search, there are many other nice ones.

I've admired Rhinoculips' set up for some time. Very slick, though I imagine it could be on the higher end cost wise.

Otherwise your average camp stove could work just fine. Coleman or the like.

also not cheap, but it will last a long time. I have a regular size holland and love it, but it is not a burger kind of grill, it is more like a convection oven. I love it though. Thanks

How is the heat output on it? I have had a few small portable LPG BBQs over the years and they seem to range from just hot enough to not really hot enough.

I have a Weber Baby-Q (Q-100) and it performs better than any grille I've owned. The flame control is excellent on high and low, and the cast iron grille has excellent heat retention. I've been very happy with it. I also have a cast iron griddle that works very well when used on the grille. The problem I've had with a lot of the portable grilles is flame up when cooking on low like with chicken. Most don't cook on low heat very well. The Weber cooks on low with little flame up and very good heat control, but on high it will definitely broil a steak.

I too have the Weber Q100. PDX Westy said it all, the grill works like the larger Weber I have on my deck. I have been very pleased with it cooking all sorts of meats and veggies. The only drawback to the Q100 is the size, if you're entertaining a large crowd, you may have to cook in stages.
The price was right for me too. My boss's boss gave me mine when I told him that it would go nicely in my Westy when I go camping. He said really, take one!

Hints. If you have 2 burners (a few small ones do) then you can cook chicken over the turned off side. That should eliminate flare up, but this may take longer and requires that you not lift the lid as often.. Used on bill grills. Also I have a squirt bottle of water for flare ups. Another good way to cook chicken and keep it moist but cooked thru is to nuke it for several minutes. Gets the inside done better rather than having to burn the outside.

I got a new Toolbox BBQ when I came back from my trip last November. Haven't gotten to use it but hope to remedy that soon.

$40 clearance - and now's the time of year to find BBQ deals! This has a surprisingly strong burner and heavy, porcelain-coated cast iron grate.
Not sure if it would turn down low enough for slow roasting/smoking. Works great for me because most of my camp cooking is quick: chicken/burgers/brats...

PS - Keep in mind, I'm CHEAP! Still, I love the look of the Magma & it'd be super easy to cook under the awning if there's weather...(just can't swing the $200+)

I have heard good things about the Coleman Road Trip grill.

Dragonfly Vans (VW van rental outfit in Idaho) provides them with all van rentals, which to me says something about their quality and performance.

For you vans without a kitchen, this grill works as a normal stove and as grill, possibly a nice double duty item.

I have the small Sea-B-Que. It's very light and portable. Fits in my rooftop box. Big enough to cook for several people if you are good with space and crafty.
Heavy duty SS will outlast me.
I got it as a gift but it's the best car camping/westy accessory ever.

Have had a couple of the Magmas over the yrs on various boats.
Tough kettles! Charcoal or gas.. My latest one is gas and has additional heat plates that allow better/even cooking with pots/pans.. So you can easily turn it into a "stove". Pretty good heat/cook control.
Nice compact size.
Very easy to clean. All stainless. Parts are easily available. A bit pricey.
I've never had a Magma age out or stop working.. They've only moved on when a boat was sold.

We have one of the big Weber Qs.. a 330 I think, for use at home. It is a GREAT grill!
..and the little Q100 looks to be a good choice, too. I have had my eye on the little one for the family cabin... but they are not that cheap either.


Some advantages though, can be disadvantages.

The Magna needs a stand/mount.
The Weber portable Q-series needs a table of some sort..

I've been on a lot of campouts where people had the Coleman grilles and have been really disappointed with them. They're really not grilles at all though. They're a stove burner with a grate over the top. About the only thing they cook well is hot dogs. With the burner flame so close to the grate, it burns almost everything. I wouldn't consider this at all if you really like to grill/bbq.

Note that the Magma and Webber Q cook with the lid closed, true slow cooking BBQing.. the others are just grills, they only cook uncovered, which works fine for things that cook quickly
