All,
New Type 1 kit on a 1977, new bearings too.
Installed and adjusted per VW repair manual.
When you grab the top of the rotor and pull & push, you can feel
slop in it.
What did I do wrong?
Thanks, BC |

Front or back? If front, the locking nut that holds the bearings onto the spindle is not tight enough. Often times when using new bearings, you have to go back and retighten that nut after the bearings seat themselves. _________________ scrapyards are for quitters

Front.
I did seat the bearings several times until it would not turn. I will
try it a couple of more times.
I did install the races into the rotor supporting the rotor and using a pin punch
and ball peen hammer. Same way that I have done it for 40 years.
Being a 1977, catalogs only show one part number for inner and outer.
It is a ball joint front end, but I am going to look at the 1966-1968
part numbers too.
Thanks, BC |

Solved it!!
It was the seals.
They were boxed wrong. Come to find out they
were the 1966 to 1968 thick rubber seals.
It would not allow the bearing to fully seat on the spindle.
I'll round up a pair of the National style seals tomorrow.
