alright so I have a 1600cc dp in my 71 (duhh) but anyways when its running it idles pretty high, I'd say about 1100 and there is an occasional backfire but as soon as you get on the gas and its under a load it seems to run fine and not sputter or backfire. So it only does it when its idling and being revved in neutral. Anyone have any ideas? thanks

Go through the idle adjustment procedure for your carb. I assume it's a 34 pict 3?

Also check the usual things to make sure everything is in order first. Valve adjustment, point gap, etc. No sense in tuning the carb if something else is out of whack.

not if its coming through a vacuum port. the increased vacuum through the throat of the intake will compensate for the leak once your at speed.
