After a couple years of looking, after many months of really serious, ready to buy looking, after much frustration of having vans sold before I could make the call, looking at vans with unexpected noises, body damage and/or rust not visible in the listing photos, after reading ridiculously inflated listings one after another, after brieflu considering a Eurovan.....
I found it! A 1985 Westy with Tiico conversion, zero rust, perfect original paint, WORKING AC (a must for my wife that made the search even more difficult), an automatic transmission (a plus for my wife).
The van is literally from "the little old lady from Pasadena." The nicest couple ever. I feel like we are inheriting some serious good vibes with the van. For sure pride of ownership.
Here's a couple of photos with my GL tin top "Deacon" soon to be for sale (and my next door neighbor's Eurovan). Basically the condition of the front bumper and front seats is the condition of the van in general.

Guilty as charged.
Current: 1990 Westy Camper - Bostig RG4, 2wd, manual trans w/Peloquin, NAHT high-top, 280 ah LFP battery, 160 watts solar, Flash Silver, seam rust, bondo, etc., etc.
Past: 1985 Westy Camper - 1.9 wbx, 2wd, manual trans, Merian Brown, (sold after 17 years to Northwesty who converted it to a Syncro). |

Very nice indeed!
Someone will probably asked what you paid - just tell them you do not remember. You will indeed forget that minor point once you have had the joy of travelling in it awhile. |

Hopefully you did not run through the streets naked as (even in Redondo Beach) that sort of thing is not always appreciated. |

No naked streaking, but I'm tempted to sleep in it, like a kid in a tent in his own backyard...
AC is actually Behr in dash and uses propane instead of r12 or r134. My first question was, "Isn't that flammable? " He said it has a higher flash point than the others, is actually safer.
Driving home I was in stop and go traffic in 85 degrees and I saw the temp gauge creep up but never into a danger zone. Just to be safe I didn't blast the AC. I didn't want to melt the thing on her maiden voyage. ONce traffic started flowing I turned on the AC... in a vanagon!
Engine was smooth. Much slower that my GL with standard transmission but I guess that's to be expected with the extra weight and the auto trans.
I had to stomp on the brakes to stop compared to my GL. I'm wondering if that's just another by product of the weight? Or if I need to have the brakes checked. I had to adjust my driving style a bit, leaving more room in front of me on the freeway (and of course people kept moving into my buffer zone).
Still, very happy camper here... |
