I was just sitting here in my drug induced state -- prescription and are necessary for me to be mobile but non the less it kind of gets you floating. While I was 'thinking" it struck me that the colored vinyl food wrap stuff that wifey uses in the kitchen might just work a window tint, If applied as a window film I believe it will adhere but dont know for how long. There is a decent selection of colors so that works and I imagine that several layers would provide the degree of see/not see through. It would be much more cheaper than the store bought film by a mile
I dont know what type of adhesive is used on the commercial films but I am pretty sure it is readily available and not expensive. I believe I am going to research this because if I can get it cheaper and working just as well than I am a happy camper.
Has anyone tried this or heard of anyone that has done it?.
It will no be boring because you can count on me to keep coming up with this sort of silly thing.
Pills are kicking in now so it of to sleep. Nite all.

I suppose you could wrap the edge and trim it with a blade. see how long it lasts. saran isnt necessarily eco friendly, unless they recycle it now.
the tint industry touts the durability of metallic coatings over the rest..eh! |

No way. Tint films are dimensionally stable, and optically clear. Sarandon Wrap is neither. The former helps it apply without wrinkles and that's going to make SW extremely difficult to lay flat. The latter means the SW will be like looking through wildly poor quality glass - so badly distorted that there will be no "gee I saved money and tinted my glass myself" feeling whatsoever.
Of course by now you are awake and realizing all this...

Ah! drug induced thoughts........
I was looking at this stuff the other day. Pricey, but really cuts sun ray/heat into the van with out looking like a mafia hit car.

I once bought a custom cut window tint kit off of ebay for my Mercedes. I abandoned the entire enterprise after about 15 minutes of effort--very unsatisfying results. I eventually paid the $275 for a pro install and consider it money well spent. _________________ Casey--

My neighbor had too many spirits a few Halloweens back and wrapped my whole Westy in Saran Wrap and hung Christmas ornaments all over it.
Darn kids.... |

I think Saran Wrap would give off a gas from the heat of the sun. _________________ '09 2.5L Jetta 5 cylinder, 5 spd, super turbo, see thread in H2O Cooled Jetta, etc...

Sound too time consuming for something that wouldn't last long or do the intended job. Window tint also helps with UV rays if I remember correctly, I can't imagin that the wrap would. _________________ '80 Westy "The Hummingbird Messanger" |

The PO (or one of them) put DIY window tint on my 86 Westy. What is the best way to get it off? Especially on the rear window with the defroster wiring bonded to the glass. Van is new to me and I don't know if the defroster actually works (many other things don't), but I want to keep as many options open as I can.
Just the first of many.

I would think a steamer might do with a plastic "putty" knife _________________ '09 2.5L Jetta 5 cylinder, 5 spd, super turbo, see thread in H2O Cooled Jetta, etc...

There is a tool used for removing wall paper that you roll across the tint lightly, putting small slits in the tint. Then the steam gets to the glue behind the tint. Works well. _________________ '80 Westy "The Hummingbird Messanger" |

There is a spray called "Tint-off" that breaks down the glue. _________________ I am a high-functioning autistic into VW diesels and Vanagons along with other things that are unrelated to this site. |

This tip works good. You can soak the old tint with windex, then use Saran wrap to cover the old tint and retain the windex on the tint, preventing it from drying up. |
