Howdy

My seats are shot and I am thinking of buying a pair of Corbeau GTS II or Sports Seats. Mounting them with the D392T brackets.

Just wondering if anyone out there has done this and what they think of the improvement with the seats and if mounting them with the D392T bracket makes the seat too high.

Thanks

Mike

Did you end up getting these seats Mike?
Or has anyone else tried this specific combo?

Man if only those had armrests! Not sure I'm ready to give that up. I guess I could put an armrest on the door....but I really like having both arms. ~800/pair in suede....dang that's reasonable.

I now have these seats and brackets sitting on my floor awaiting installation. I was assured by one of the suppliers these brackets would work in a westy but for the life of me I can't see how it's going to work.
If anyone has experience with this or can help me locally I'll be happy to buy the beer!

I think the seat bolsters (sides) would be a real beyatch on ingress/egress, and would wear really quickly?

Have any photos you can post? Might help us help you!

I had a set of BMW E30 Sport Seats (very much like the Recaros or Corbeau GTS) in my lowered 73 Panel Van, and the bolsters were a bit of a hassle - and that was lowered! I ended up using Corbeau Sport Seats, which have much lower and more rounded bolsters. Worked great.

Feel free to check out my blog of my seat "upgrade". I simply bought some metal bars from Home Depot and drilled holes to make my custom brackets align with the stock sliders. Probably not the best option but it was cheap and it works fine. My $200 cheap made in China seats have been working great for almost 1 year now.

Okay, thanks to my good buddy Robyn, the seats are in! He was able to see right away what I couldn't and the supplied brackets actually work very well.
Here is a side-by-side of the old and new seats:

These are the heated cloth model.

The bracket attaches to a bar that goes into the slider. This is the part I initially missed! Embarassed

We cut holes in the middle of the swivel for the heater wiring. Luckily there were already factory holes in the centre of the pedestal:

The wiring was run under the carpet from the driver side to the battery:

Pre-exisitng holes on the pedestal sides were enlarged to make ideal placements for the switches:

The only downside is the the brackets make the seats sit much higher than stock. The passenger seat barely clears the westy curtain assembly and anyone over 5'7'' is going to have a tough time sitting here. Lucky my partner is about 5'2". We still have to test if her feet are going to dangle!

You can see here how much extra height the bracket assembly adds:

I'm hoping there is some way the ends can be cut down and the two rails welded together to reduce height, but the bottoms are off-centre from the tops:

We ended up taking the swivel out of the driver side so I could engage the pedals without rubbing my legs on the steering wheel. Otherwise I'm really happy with my new driving position, support and heat! The overall ride feels better in these seats too! Cool

...and I don't miss the armrests! Razz

NICE!

I saw that Corbeau lists Vanagon adapter rails on its webstore...
Am I correct in assuming these are those same rails?

Corbeau seats have just moved up a notch on my seat options list!

Is there any chance they will do arm rests in the future?

Yes, they will work the same with or without the swivel.
I don't know about armrests but the side bolsters give me better support than the stock armrests did. Might not be as good for chillin' in camper mode though.

I can't tell from the photo, but it looks like you could cut the ends off the top bracket and drill and bolt it to the vanagon rails just as the lower bracket does. You might need to use a hex bolt instead of the allen.

I like the seats, but this bracket height could be an issue for some. I found just putting my standard (non-westy) passenger seat on a stock swivel changed the height for the passenger. Not the end of the world, but anyone over 6' or with a long trunk has their eye level approaching at top of the door window.

At 6-3, I use standard Vanagon seats in my Westy.. on a swivel and am OK.
But.. If I do these seats.. I'd remove the swivel on driver's side, I think.. Wifey is 5-6.. so it might work with swivel for passenger side.
Others would just have to grin and bear it. Very Happy

The seat cushion is also considerably longer than the Westy seat..meaning it will only spin in one direction on the swivel, too.

At this point is the lack of armrest that is holding me back.

One side is completely off-centre. It may require creating a new, wider rail.
Food for thought...i really want these seats to be perfect!

I will inquire, as well.. and then suggest that if they do, they may sell a lot of seats to Vanagon and Bay Window owners.
Send them a link to this thread.. "there may be interest"

If there IS interest a place like Van Café can stock a few pair, even.

Update: Put in some hours with my Special Lady Friend in the co-pilot seat. The height was not an issue as she was able to put her feet on the floor no problem. She loved the seat and felt it way more comfortable than the old stocker. She made a point of saying she didn't miss the armrests, which was a big concern for her.
I feel good about the choice and not too worried about cutting down the bracket now. Tall people can ride in the back!
