I posted awhile back about needing to undo some lowering, but I posted before actually seeing the car (purchased here on VW planet from out-of-state). I have to tow it 800 miles tomorrow and the front wheels are scraping the fenders when the car turns, so I need help ASAP! The front end of this '56 is slammed. Someone had completely removed the shocks, so I purchased and installed some lowered KYB GR-2's yesterday. That raised the front end a tiny bit, but not enough. The beam should be adjustable, but it does not look exactly like the adjustable beams I've seen in the past. It has a nut located at the center of each of the two beams (as I am told all adj. beams do; non-adj. have a nut on just one beam right?), but in the adj. front ends I've seen before there are plates with "teeth" under each nut (for adjusting I presume)and this beam does not have those. Can it be adjusted? If so, how do I do it? I've got the front end off the ground and I'm ready to adjust this thing, I just need to know how to proceed. Someone help me quickly...please!

It sound like they took out some of the springs and the suspension is now on the stops. The stock tubes have an allen set screw with a locking nut on each beam in the center and is not adjustable. If it has 165 tires on it now buying 135 tires might give enough clearance.Another way is to unbolt the front fenders until the repairs can be made.If all else fails renting a u-haul trailer might be an option. Good luck. Tim.

Thanks for your help. It already has 135s and there still isn't enough clearance! I think I'll just remove the fenders for the drive. How hard is it to fix the springs? What do I need to do it and is it a quick fix?

If you want to return to a stock ride height its not too hard.Buy the springs, and follow the bentley official vw service manual.Easy weekend job. Dropped spindles along with shorter shocks are the way to properly drop the front.
