Ok,,since having learned ( perhaps the hard way ) about these beasts,,I have noticed that the rear mounting ones seemed to be 'flawed' ( least as far as I can see..Where the rear mounts to the 1/4 panel is there actually anything there besides sheet metal? ie some sub structural support or something ? Otherwise it would seem that if you got tagged in the back end that not only would you have bumper and the obvious damage to deal with, but also a nice tear in your 1/4 from the bar pushing forward.

I ran some 2" square washers on the very front bolt when I installed the set on the Boise bus. The center two bolts are inbetween the corner seam and the wheel well seam so I suspect it's a fairly strong area.

The Hurst bumpers have extra brackets as well as the bar that goes from left to right.
The Hurst brackets are white in the pic above.
The original brackets are grey.

Those early bumpers through 58 are just flimsy.

What's the difference between "early" vs "late" on the rear hurst bumpers... is it something to due with the bumpers??? Looks like the rear would fit either way... (I have a '61)

On original Hursts early and late rears is where the lower tube stops. Early stopped at the lower mounting bolt on the bumper, like the one pictured above. On the later ones the tube extended past the mounting bolt on the bumper and wrapped into the wheel well some. But both types were for use on pressed bumpers. I think all repros out now are the early hurst style and that is the style you need to run on your late bumpers so they can sit farther back and you won't have the tube bent in to the side of the bumper or battery corner.
Here's a picture Clara posted. This is the best one I could find of late Hursts, notice the lower portion of the tube going into the wheel well.

I see what your saying for the "OG" style.... but for repros, your saying they commonly look like the top pic, but modified to fit properly?? Someone mentioned it's a bracketing thing for the repros...

Thx for the insight... Smile

that bus EmpiGT found appears to be a late 57/58. it also has the same type of rear hursts as the KING panel. i'm thinking the kind that snub off at the rear bumper are an earlier version.

Alot of discussion about this on page 3 of this thread

I have the set off busnutbob's '58 sunroof standard, the one with the glass cab divider, and they are the snub end type.

While on the topic of rear hursts, does anyone know if there was another set for single cabs?

I have a set of the volkscafe early rear set and they foul on the sharp corners, wheras the ones of this single clear easily. Was there another set made with a tighter radius for the single cabs?

I have no idea how many you have had. I'm not sure there are ten original rear sets in existance.

These are sets that Damon out of Old Volks Stockton made about 10+ years ago. One or two sets were made for single cab corners.

^^ Thanks,
At least now I know why the set I have don't fit and his did.
Now I need to decide if I want to try and modify the ones I have or forget about putting them on the rear.

There should be a flat stock washer about 4" long and has square holes for carriage bolts. that's what came with the original rears that I had.
