I was walking with my kids this morning and my 7 year old son saw a Vanagon in Vons parking lot and starting looking at it. He said "Dad this is like your van." At that time the owner came out and we started talking. He just bought it a few months ago and he is doing his own work. So I asked him if he goes on The Samba? He had never heard of it. So I told him about it and he was very excited. This is not the first time I have mentioned this site to other VW owners and they also have never heard of it. I really enjoy telling people about this site and how great the people on here are. |

It is looked at like a "DIY" site by many I turn on to it.
Not every VW owner is in that category, thank goodness.
Most of my clients have looked at the links I send them and all reply with similar feelings.
The finishing blow for many of them are the thread hijacks and off topic replies with added ridiculousness.
I appreciate this site, do my best to inform many about what I am doing and learning while doing it. Not everyones cup of tea.

I do agree this sight isn't for everyone. However the man I met this morning was very friendly and really seemed like he will benefit from this sight. I am thankful for the Samba causing the inflation of the Vanagon prices. At least we have something good invested in when the dollar tanks. |

I always tell everyone about it, even the people who are in Vanagon business. I think this site is excellent even for people who can't or don't DIY. It's all educational, some (wee bit) entertainment, but like has been said in other threads, its a helpful community sharing a common disease/interest/addiction = Vanagonitis. I didn't know about it when I bought my Westy but it has become part of my life now. Even if I can't DIY, it is educational so that I know what the heck is going on and so I can talk intelligently with people who work on my van. SHOCKED? Sure I can talk intelligently when I want to.

There are a lot of folks out there that are simply not Internet people. For them, it's not until they do a Google search looking for information about their VW that they encounter TheSamba (and other sites, for that matter). Heck, my mom didn't realize TheSamba had a classifieds section until I sent her a link to an ad.

I figured Id run my new engine until until theres no more fuel for civilians and it would make a great snore room with eventual flat tires--thats why we need to replace out weatherstripping and window seals now. If you park it where theres a cool view, it could be worth millions of barter credits.
vanagons are potential life boats
I run into people all the time who know nothing of the samba or...the dangerous ones who feign ignorance and know exactly who YOU are.

I've been tempted to do two things:
- put some sort of TheSamba sticker on the back of the van (not on the paint but on the rear window.)
- Make up some sort of little card to leave under wipers of parked Vanagons.
I figger since I see so so many around my home turf, that maybe some good will or karma would be created. What ever..... _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!
