PostPosted: Sun Oct 24, 2010 6:24 pm    Post subject: New Seatbelts Reply with quote

Hey all,

My 75 Riviera already has seatblets but they are pretty old and I wanted to upgrade them to more modern three-point retractable seatbelts in front and back if possible. My problem is that I am a big guy and would like something with some room. Not only are the current seatbelts old but they are too small so they don't currently fit at all. Of course, the seatbelts in my wife's and my Honda Civic (04) and CR-V (08) have no problem fitting but again, those are modern. Do you know of where I could get any seatbelts that work? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

David

The CiP1 ones worked for me and they were easy to install (I just have them in the front). Although, there's not much room left over when they're on, so I'd double-check on the length they come in.

I bought 2 from a non-wrecked early 90's Jetta and they worked perfect. Spent $25 total......

I've purchased a few sets off eBay that were brand new generic. i seem to remember one set being plenty long. Do some online shopping.

X2 From the junk yard. Inspected first of course, since they may have been in a wreck. I'm very happy with them.

You have to ask yourself what is your life worth. I have a brand new set of German VW belts from Go Westy. Never buy a used set from a wrecked car, and used in general in my opinion is a bad idea. But it's your life and your bus.

I also have belts from a non wrecked vanagon. You can get the 90 degree brackets needed to mount them from lowes or home depot. I believe it is the Simpson 'A21'. If that's not it, then it's right around there. It's at least 3/8" thick and the mounting holes line up perfect. Also if when removing the vanagon belts, be sure to take the top mounting bolts with you so you don't have to re-buy grade 8 hardened bolts to clear the 'tab' on the inner door pillars.

Another thing occurred to me. YOU HAVE THE SHORTEST DISTANCE BETWEEN YOU AND WHATEVER YOU HIT IN AUTOMOBILE DESIGN HISTORY!

No you shouldn't. Because if you do, you will never ever buy a Bus.

Wow, I'm surprised that the first couple of posts didn't demand that you use the search button. Shocked This has been covered a lot.

HINT: that's a good idea. Cool

Anyway, I too got retractable belts out of a non-wrecked, I believe, 1991 Vanagon for my 1970 Riviera. I made the 90 degree brackets out of some 1/4 inch fence brackets I found at the hardware store, and they fit perfect. But like someone above mentioned, your big problem will be the top bolt and the "lip" that bracket will have to clear (You'll see)

I live in Mass, and junk yards will not sell me seat belts.
If you check Ebay, you can get the same belts for much cheaper, last time I looked.

+1

Old belts can be fatigued from years of sun (UV) and heat degradation and snap just when you really need them not to. I like my GoWesty belts. I like my proper load range tires. I like my quality brake components. Some things really aren't worth cheaping out on. My $0.02.

As for rear 3-points: There isn't a good option for a Westy. There is a post somewhere (from Nigel, I think) that describes mounting them on a passenger bus. There is some additional equipment required.
