|
|
Hi guys.
I'm trying to sort the play in my link pins on my 56.
The play is on the passengerside lower link pin.
Firstly i have slackened the pinch bolt and turned the link pin to take out the slack, then retightened the pinch bolt.
The play is still there.
Then i have taken off the drum stub axle to count and measure the shims for the top and bottom link pins and have noticed that the shim pack for the top link pin is a thicker shim pack than the shim pack on the bottom link pin.
I would say there is about 1.5mm differance in the top and bottom shim packs.
Is this were the play is at.
The pinch bolt that go into the trailing arms also have some play in them.
When i slide the link pins into the trailing arms so that the square end is just poking through there is also a bit of slack there to.
Thanks for any replies
Garrick. |

Probably time for a rebuild mate
most VW repaire books will have a chart for reshimming
its pretty straight forward
i dont have any contacts in the UK anymore but Karman Konection and cool air are very helpful guys _________________ BUSDROPPINGBEAMNARROWINGSTEERINGBOXRAISING"C"NOTCHINGRUSTREPAIRINGBEETLEDROPPING

Ok.
Just had another go at .
Top link pin now has 5 shims each .Inner n outer.
Bottom link pin has 5 inner and 8 outer and still has play in bottom link.
Gunna pump some more grease in tomorow n see if it does any thing |

Hi There.
What i did was look at the chart for the pre 60 shim set up and go from there which said to put 10 shim per link pin . 5 inner and 5 outer, this i have done, refitted it ,twisted the pins to max and tightened pinch bolts.
the top pin is fine but bottom still has play , this is when i added the 3 spare shims to the outer bottom pin to take up the play but its still there, could it be something to do with the adjustment that has been machined into the pin(too little adjustment),if so could i put some more adjustment into the pin thus giving the pin more twist.(adjustment)to take up slack.
Thanks for your replies |

Hi SLOW36HP.
Av give up for today will try again in morning.
I did notice that the grease nipple on the bottom link has stripped its thread so when a grease gun is used its difficult to get grease into the link bushing.
I've a feeling that i'm also not getting enough grease into the link bushings.
I might try and put some more adjustment into the link pin too.

It seems to me that your problem could be solved after reading /understanding this:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/looklisten_5/page2.jpg
If that happens to your arm link the play will be always there no matter what number of shimms you fit there. Maybe you could gring or file a litle portion of the bush and be better for a while...? The rigth solution is to replace the worn arm link....
Hope this could help.

you need to measure the off set gap of the trailing arms, with the spindle off the arms put a straight edge on the trailing arm and with a rule or caliper measure the gap, this measurement is very important for the shim guide!
hope this helps mate _________________ BUSDROPPINGBEAMNARROWINGSTEERINGBOXRAISING"C"NOTCHINGRUSTREPAIRINGBEETLEDROPPING

Hi Drop Metal Customs.
Just meaured the trailing arms which gave me 7mm,so on that measurement i,ve put 5 shims inner n outer no top n bottom link pin, reasembled it,pumped it full of grease and play seams to have gone, gunna drive it a few days n recheck for play.
