I think fuel filter failure. It was maybe 3 months old and located on the left battery tray area where I thought if it were to leak it would not leak on the engine and ignite. Going to do all threaded fuel lines on the next one.

wow that really sucks man.
it's the nightmare of all the VW owners.
I once had a small engine fire starting, my heart skipped a few beats. I managed to extinguish it without damage, but man-o-man....

Fortunately no one got hurt in the fire, from the looks of the video it burned severely, so sad to see.
I hope that you find the motivation to go on with everything VW, after that traumatic event.

Greg, I have side vents and rear hinges if you are going to rebuild her. Let us know what else and we all can chip in. Sorry for your loss bro. Keep us informed.

Thanks everyone who has offered to help with parts or help and brian for the offer of the cheap bus. Going to wait to hear back from the insurance company before I decide exactly what to do. I would like to end up keeping the bus if not just to swap parts over to a replacement bus. We'll see what happens. Going to feel weird until I get another bus in my driveway.

Sorry for your loss. Your build was a tribute to the average guy just getting his bus up and running. Not everything has to be 100% pretty but just to be enjoyed and used. I hope you get this one back on the road or get another bus!

Ok, so what happened was I was in the car pool lane with in traffic doing about 40, the rest of the lanes were moving about 20. The pedal all of the sudden lost it's springyness and the engine died. My initial thought was that the throttle cable had snapped. (It had snapped about a week ago and I band-aided it by bending 2 hooks in the cable) I was on my way to skinner's shop to get some window seals and a throttle cable. I put my signal on and started cutting acorss traffic as quick as I could with no power. I came to a stop blocking the two right lanes. By then I'd realized the engine was not running so the throttle cable was not the issue. I looked back to see black smoke starting to fill the back of the bus. It get's a bit foggy here, but I either looked back or in the mirror or opened the door and saw flames coming out of the vents. We all piled out of the bus and freaked out for a second. I grabbed the front bumper and pulled the flaming bus off the freeway. Unfortunately as soon as the front tire came off the pavement the bus picked up a ton of speed and there was no stopping it and it turned right into the ditch and struck the freeway sound wall, which actually wrinkled the top of the dash.

The bus was towed to Skinner's shop and he will be handling the claim for me. Upon inspection of the engine compartment and throttle cable, the reason the pedal hit the floor was that the return spring on the carb had gotten so hot it lost it stretched. So the bus must have been burning for a bit before the engine died. And the bus was running great right till it stalled out. The fuel line probably completely melted off about the same time the spring melted which is why the engine died at about that time.

Shocked That sounds like it could have turned out a lot worse than it did, glad you guys made it out of that alright. Let us know what the insurance company says. Sorry man.

Major bummer man, terrible feeling. I was riding with my cousin in a 67 kombi about 8 years ago and it caught fire. Hopefully you find a nice replacement!

Amazing what the heat did to the vents...

But still, it doesn't look that bad. I'll bet it could be saved.

One of the firemen hacked those vents... I think it was the same one that hacked up the rear end and decklid after the fire was out.

For sure this can be fixed! Why throw out all that hard work because of a little fire? It would just make the story of you bus that much more interesting! I'm sure there are some good people here who will donate some time and parts to help you out. If you were local, I would! Chin up! Cheers!
