Hi folks.

for properly installed-adjusted rear brakes.
if wheel cylinder(s) without internal springs are installed, does the lack of those springs really have that much effect on height-feel-efficiency of pedal on first push?
My sense is that poor first push pedal height-feel-efficiency is more likely due to improper adjustment than using non spring type wheel cylinders.

well.... for the cost of a cheap cylinder without springs, try it and report back. the safe money is on one with the spring in the middle. but again, Robert Frost might advise otherwise:
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference. _________________ -dan

the spring is actually pretty stiff and keeps the pistons in contact with the shoes pretty good
think of it this way....
when you compress pistons in a caliper to put new pads in it takes a few pumps to get the pads to touch the rotor and the pedal goes from mush to firm.
same deal here. the shoe springs basically push the pistons in to the point you need 1/2-3/4 of a pump to get them to make contact again
and yes there is a noticeable difference (at least I have found there to be) _________________

Thanks guys.
The recent post on ATE cylinder availability (or not) spawned the question.
I have one more new set of those ATE's on hand but others may not be able to find them hence the question.

Oh good to know.
Have you tried honing the ATE cylinders?
I'll see if I can't rescue my old wheel cylinders from the recycle pile. Thanks Doug.

yes. successfully. lacking a true brake cylinder hone, i simply taped some emery paper around a dowel, chucked in the drill and honed in and out until smooth bliss was achieved.
but who's Doug? <been> _________________ -dan

Oh you know. Daryl's long lost cousin Doug.
I think it's my mind "seeing" the upper case D blending into "oug". That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it. lol.
ok good tips, thanks again.
Somewhere in my heap o stuff is a brake cylinder hone tool.... somewhere.
