Is anyone putting these tins http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1881775 back in place after a rebuild? I have the small square bottom deflectors installed that go under the cylinders, but I wasn't sure if these will really make a difference on what essentially will be a car that maybe gets a 100-150 miles a year driving when it is done Smile

VW did away with that style of deflector for a reason.

I would run the later ones since it will make the engine more reliable and only a really anal detail freak would climb under the car to look for them.

Price is too high for that nearly nobody would use them....
the 36hp engine has more power, more compression, the same distance from cylinders and would get hotter than the 25hp engine, but at that era, VW left them away.
The deflectors would not let the air between the cylinders?

The top deflectors in the ad were the old style deflectors. They were replaced by the square sheet metal with the tabs that clip onto the bottom cylinder studs.

You should never install both. The square one that mounts on the bottom provide superior cooling.

Thanks everyone for the feedback, this really helped! I will stick with only using the small square air deflector tins that are already installed on my rebuilt engine clipped under the cylinders (thanks, Joe R.!).

By the way, my stock industrial engine from 1953, 25hp, had both installed...
