There is a retaining clip that keeps tension on the ebrake spring going to the brake shoe that I always hear about. It's often missing, and people just say "just use a washer" etc. Here's some pics of how I went about it for others to reference.

I had one original clip (black sheetmetal looking piece), so I was able to see exactly what needed to happen. I used finishing washers, which not only center on the backing plate, but also help keep the spring centered as well. And it's stainless.

nice job, i usually just cut them from a scrap piece of steel or aluminum, when they are missing

baywindows use the same piece, so i save them from those and use them on splits

this is an easy one to reproduce...

Absolutely!!! Except if it's a true commercial bay, I save those too.

i've used the "horseshoe" clips that are also used for the e-brake arm pin. I crimp them slightly so that they are not tight on the cable and the spring holds them in place.

Ok I made two of the finishing washer versions. It works good putting two into the vise at the same time.

I have the original e-brake cables with original e-brake compression spring not those shiny ones in the picture. The shape of the cone is perfect for fitting over the backing plate metal grommet but for some reason the very end of the coil-y spring hunts for the cut in the washer and embeds itself into the cable when you pull the e-brake. It still works but the cone shape makes it jam where normally it would sit flat against the flat style. I think I'll just let some grease and steel play their little game.

I might try the hazetguy method next. If anyone finds a source for the original style e-brake spring clip thing post it up please.

Why not just make one thin cut (like tin snips) and twist the washer just e'nuff to slip the cable in then twist back less to snag.

Thanks! That's actually how I made mine: one cut. I found some original e-brake springs that come to a conclusion spiral that end in a flat that I'll now use.
