I've got a 1600dp engine and it won't idle . I got it to idle before by adjusting the volume intake screw, and now it went out of wack in the process of putting a new fuel pump in it. So I think I should probabally tune it right... right? Well I've got a 34 pict carb, and a header for exhaust. the valves and sparkplugs are gapped right. I just need to know the degree and RPM's I shoudl time my engine at. I have a degree wheel so i can time it to the degree. I'm curious though do you do the timing degree before the RPM's or the other way around.
Well I would appreciate it if I could get these specs and the order in which to do them. Thanks! |

If you have a double vacuum distributor - it's timed at 5ATDC (that's AFTER) at 850-900rpm.
If you have a single vacuum distributor, that's timed static (or idling with the vacuum line disconnected and the carby port plugged) at 7.5BTDC.
If you have a 009 distributor (no vacuum), it must be timed at 28-32 degrees at 3000+rpm. You can then measure the idle advance if you want and then use THAT idle setting on THAT 009 next time. The 009 are built cheap, and so they vary, and the max advance is more important than the idle advance, so it's set at max - not idle (until you know what THAT 009s advance is best at). You use as much of the 28-32 as you can without the engine detonating. If it still detonates at 28, use higher octane fuel - never less than 28 (makes the engine run hot).
Here's a tune-up guide with lots more info.

Allright thanks guys. And yes it's a 009. So do I adjust the carb before I do my timing or after? |
