Has anyone seen this before, under where my m plate goes on the bulkhead there are painted numbers in blue. There under the factory paint, I can make out the numbers for the most part and can tell that 2 of them are on the m plate 175 & 794, the top ones seem to be 2U & ?64.

any info would be great, do all type 2's have this?

Edit, let ma clarify, these numbers are not under the m plate, but just below where the m plate goes. Again, these are under the factory paint and maybe even the factory primer, its hard to tell on that. They have to be from the factory but why? what were they for?

sorry the pics are sideways, I dont know why they keep doing that.

Do they appear to be stamped (like an ink stamp), rather than painted? Could be an assembly line note for options that needed to be installed before the painting process.

M codes and provisions to be incorporated during the body build.

Ah,thought that might get a reply. Yes they appear to be stamped. I know the 175 is for the bumper's but the 794? have no idea, and I'm not sure what the other one's might be for.

And thank you for the replies.

I have seen a couple people post in the past that they discovered similar numbers while doing very light media blasting of their front bulkhead.

I do believe it is the M-codes for the Bus.

794 is a real M-code but it is unknown.

Hey thanks Everett,I knew I couldn't have been the only person to find these. See the other m code on the plate is 300 which I believe has only been seen on US 59 panel's, which is what this is (Feb 59), also unknown I believe, it's not stamped on there, but the other 2 are, the 2U and the ?64, makes me wonder what those were for/what they mean? Also, did they do this on all type 2's? just certain year's? just certain model's?

Appreciate the info guys.

Edit, I'm sorry, the 794 is the one seen on US 59 panel, still unknown if correct. Anybody know what the 300 is?

On my 57 there is no M Code plate but under the paint just behind the driver seat I found some numbers clearly put on with an ink stamp under the paint so I looked up the numbers that were each three digit numbers so I knew they had to be M codes of some sort. The cool thing was on a piece of sheet metal there was a picture of a fish jumping up over some sort of design. I`m thinking it was put on by the company that provided VW with sheet metal before they stamped it into usable parts.

hey twinwindows, got a pic of the fish? i'd like to see that. and you said yours were behind the drivers seat, not on the pass side by the m plate location?

westcoastbullies, what year were yours found on?

so, so far we've seen em on a 57, 59, and 60. it would be cool to know if they did this thru all years or just up to a certain year

I've found them on a 77 panel (grease pencil) and heard of others on later buses as well so I suspect there is no cutoff date, when the partial body is going into the jig someone down the line has to know what to add or leave off.

I wish I took a picture of the fish logo cos after I media blasted the body it disappeared. And yes the numbers were on the bulk head panel behind the driver seat.

Codes went something like 6 pop out windows 9 passenger seat and heavy duty shocks.
