1952 Standard left hand drive.
This is a curiosity post ... I sold this car sometime around 1989 to a gentleman from eastern Connecticut. The near complete VW (less engine) was purchased in the Hartford, CT area around 1976 with the intention of a full resto ... unfortunately life took a different turn, and never happened. It sat in a barn for several years, then outdoors with a tarp over it for a few more. Then it was time to say goodbye The reality was I wasn't going to get to it. Huge regrets!!
The beauty of that car (to me at least) were the mechanical brakes, the functioning semaphores, the original steering wheel, and if I remember correctly 16" wheels and tires. The pans had some holes, and the mice took care of most of the original upholstery ... but I believe it was all original.
There were several "daily driver" Beetles during this time; a custom '60, a '59, a cream puff original '61 purchased from the proverbial little ol' lady in San Bernardino, CA in 1977 (for $300!), a '65, another '67 originally purchased in Germany and brought over the pond by a military officer, and lastly a '69 back in 1982.
Was going through some stuff in the garage today with my daughter, and came across a single copy of How to Restore your VW (presented by hot VWs) dated Summer 1988 ... and within that issue, a hand written note with the serial number and notes for the classified add to sell my '52.
That's what prompted this post ... I've checked the registry and it's not there. Is a Samba member sitting on this classic?? Is it still sitting in a barn in Eastern Connecticut somewhere?? Did it rust away back to Mother Earth?
Been wondering for years ...

Zwitter built on 10 Dec. 1952, did it look anything like this one:
I think this one is a Oct. build though _________________ There is an idea of a Billmetric; some kind of abstraction. But there is no real me: only an entity, something illusory. And though I can hide my cold gaze, and you can shake my hand and feel flesh gripping yours and maybe you can even sense our lifestyles are probably comparable... I simply am not there... |

Haha ... been wondering what the meaning of "Zwitter" was, so it's a standard split eh?
Thanks billmetric ... my old '52 looked more complete than that one. It had all the original glass, the rear apron wasn't hacked, the running boards were still intact, although the rear fenders were missing but did still have the original taillights with lenses. Don't think it had vent windows either, not sure though.
Have a few pics around the house somewhere, but have no idea where
Thanks for the flashback ...........

A zwitter is a late split with the oval dash. _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

Zwitter, It's the last of the splits. Through all the experiementing, they finally got it right It so happens that Ovals continued the tradition of this fine piece of modern engineering, and they should be classified as ovals with the split dash. |
