|
I'd like to start a thread to discuss the convertibles built from 1961-1964. It would be cool to have a point of reference for all production changes, correct era parts, accessories and mods. I'd love to see your current and past 61-64 convertibles, Post up your pics!
A registry will be here where you can post up your car. Post your cars pic with Vin, body #, engine # and pic of a birth certificate if you have one. The registry will be set up with the cars listed in order of Production. I'd be nice to set up a color reference of every paint color for these years as well.
Lets talk about your project, your concerns and stuggles and questions about your cars!! _________________ Official 58-60 "Early Big Window" Convertible Thread & Registry

I'll go first...
My 1962 was originally Black with Red interior.
The body has been painted numerous times over the years (outside only) but the interior was never messed with. I got it a year or so ago, after a friend sprayed the outside one color (flat black) I redid the interior, lay'd it out and drive it.
New pan halves and some other rust repair are in order when I find time.
OG black paint on the inside
Not sure if the black top is OG or not..

I will add one from another thread that recently came up. Pics from smittys61verts build
deck lid for 58-july 63
uber rare aug 63- sept 63 (64 model year)
notice the difference. Early lid has crescent shape hole for license plate light and partial "w" pressing and T handle
Later lid has straight pressings like 64 up lid, small round hole for light BUT has 3 holes drilled for small license plate light and STILL uses the T handle.
Here is the bentley reference
Peanut turnsignals were also transition parts early in the 64 model year
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=402683
Progressive refinements lists the larger turnsignals changed at the end of October.[/quote]
LOTS of one year only stuff on a 64 vert! |

Same as this one I just sold. People were trying to tell me it was a fake... or I had it listed wrong as an early '64 lid.

You can usually tell its real because there is no provision for mounting the license plate so the owner/dealer just put it directly on the lid.
Usually has crooked/uneven holes drilled to mount the bracket.
Mine were drilled low on the lid, just right to catch crap behind the plate and rust. |

Hey all, Since I seem not to be able to get a real answer from anyone from other Forums I thought I would ask the Vert guys. Does anyone know were you can get a Bentley Manual for 64 Vert. I find pleanty for other years but not a 1964 bug or even a 64 Vert. I keep getting refered to Amazon and they only have other publishers and newer years. I want a "real" manual and can not find one. I have been looking for a year. _________________ "Sic Vic Pacem, Para bellum - Pray for peace, prepare for war."

The Sedan and Convertible share the same Bentley workshop manual. GREAT information for either.

Thanks,
I guess they are hard to find. Went ahead and bought the new Manual from Bentley. It did not come up in the Google searches but at least they have some. Classifieds in the area have nothing like that. I did check. Bentley obviously puts gold in the lettering because it cost $109.00 USD...Ouch, but I really need it. Thanks again for the link. _________________ "Sic Vic Pacem, Para bellum - Pray for peace, prepare for war."

Oh you get your moneys worth. It's about 3 inches thick.
If you would have been patient used ones pop up often.
That's cheap for an OEM service manual. _________________ aka Ken {o\!/o}

How much does a repro and an origional vert 64 deck lid go for now? Mine has no vents and it needs them. _________________ "Sic Vic Pacem, Para bellum - Pray for peace, prepare for war."

No reproduction 58-64 exist, only 65-66 "push button" lids were made years ago.
If you need the aug-sept lid used is your only option. |

Well this topic didn't take off as I expected and hoped. Are these years that rare or are owners just too busy to post thier information? Probably the latter.
Heres mine:
1961 Ruby Red, well not now, previous owner decided to dump the suspension and spray bomb it.
It's actually a pretty darn solid car. It's on my lift waiting its turn at refurbishing.
I'll get to eventually.
VIN 393xxx June 1961
Has a dual port 1600, but I received a flat port 40 with 82.5 Cima cylinders with the car that I'll never use, unless I need a back up.
Engine number 7978635 September 63
