I have a stock width link pin beam with adjusters in my 73 Thing. The adjusters are maxed out, but I want to get a couple inches more lift. The ride right now, with fox resis, is great, and I don't want it to get too harsh by replacing all of the stock torsions with heavy duty ones.
Has anyone replaced the stock torsions in just ONE tube with HD torsions, and left the stock torsions in the other tube? Do you think I could get the extra couple inches that way without making the ride too harsh? |

Did you change out the beam? Because most Thing/181 in 1973 came with a ball joint front end.
Yes you can install just one of the heavier duty leaf pack and will be stiffer and should raise the hieght some.
Does depend on how much wieght is on the front end.
I have a friend with a Manx that has a 10,000lb winch on the front and is using the 20 percent stronger set in both top and bottom. _________________ Joseph

Yeah, the beam is a link pin beam.....I am just worried about ruining the ride......just a bit stiffer is ok, but I don't want to jar the body apart just for a couple of inches. |

Its a 73. The front is a link beam tied into the cage, r&p steering, gear one discs, and fox resis. I just finished putting in a built 002 trans, 3x3s, FOA resis, and disc brakes in the rear.
It just sits a bit stinkbug, and its 'bugging' me |

Yes I know guys than ran stock and hd leaf stacks in each tube, but these were guys in 1600 cars looking for different spring rates, not lift.
I think if you went with the hd leafs and cranked them to get the height you want, it's going to be too stiff. I run the hd leafs in my 5/16 car, but they are not cranked, and it is still a little stiff on a graded road, (works good in the rough though).
I think 3" lift spindles are going to be the way to go.
Let me know when you want to cut a trail from Cucamonga to Cajon. _________________ http://www.socalbajas.com/ |

Thanks for the reply......I was just figuring that if the stock leaves cranked all the way up was close, that one set of hd leaves just slightly cranked might do the trick.
I looked at lift spindles, and would really like to go to combos.....but I would like to keep the mechanical speedo working. I understand seebeebuggy got his combos drilled, but haven't talked to him yet.
Figures, there is no such thing as a cheap fix.
Oh yeah that trail was a blast.....its been about 8 years ago, but I rode my motorcycle from the top of Sapphire (Cucamonga Creek), across to Lytle creek.....what a fantastic ride! The road was washed out pretty bad in spots, but you could not beat the view.
