I'm rebuilding a stock 1600 Type I engine. The case has been apart for several years. I've noticed that the surface of the mating surfaces appear and feel a little oxidized. Is this a common problem? What should I do to prepare the mating surfaces to get a good seal?

Clean surfaces up by hand with a scotch brite pad.

I took mine to the car wash with some engine degreaser, a can of carb cleaner and a soft plastic detail brush. After the bath I blew out all oil channels with compressed air then wiped down the seams with laquer thinner.
