|
|
So, i'm looking for a roof basket for the front section of my sunroof syncro.
I have a set of Yakima bars to mount it too, but find that most baskets are about 36-40'' wide. I have not seen many roof baskets on a vanagon, but I just feel like wider would look better.
Does anyone have a basket that they can suggest?
I would like to find one about 48'' wide, but can't seem to find one anywhere.
The rack needs to be less than 54'' long.
Any suggestions, pictures, etc? |

I have a Syncro sun roof, have a thule roof basket it is about 42" wide. With my solar in rear, basket in front, and sun roof in the middle, it looks great!, And I can load basket from the inside of van. If you would like to see it just go to my Gallery have an old picture there. _________________ 1987 syncro westy tin top sun roof , GW2.3, rear locker, decoupler, Gary Lee tire rack & winch mount, lift, south african grill, big brakes , rhein alloy ,15 BFG AT, Fiamma 10 foot awning ,140 watt rear 85 watt front solar , mppt, truckfridge, automatic fire extinguishing system, tencent oil cooler, And a RMW SS exhaust! - 1971 bug convertible 1776 engine- 2010 Subaru turbo - 1993 Toyota 4x4 truck - 1999 Harley 95 CI, big bore, Andrews cams . Hmmm....
See I think that looks too narrow. If it were me, id switch the thule around the other way so that the wide side faces the windshield. Most baskets you can't do this with though.
I never liked the Thule baskets. I do like the yakima megawarriors, but they cost $$$. |

Well I just took some dimensions and they don't look promising. I assumed I had more space infront of the sunroof. : /
My ideal basket would be about 50-54'' wide and only 40'' long.
I think i'm not going to find such a beast.
The top of the windshield is about 54'' wide, and i only have back to the first cross support on the roof before i'd start to cover the sunroof.

Ah, so the surco can be mounted sideways, with the wide side going width rather than length? (That's at least the way it appears you have yours mounted).
If that's the case, im interested. What size surco is that?
A NEW PROBLEM HAS DEVELOPED:
In attempting to install the second set of cross bars that I purchased yesterday, I am finding that I cannot install a bar within the swing of the front door? That can't be true..... is it?
The towers keep interfering with the door as it opens/closes.
What am I doing wrong? I want a bar at the front of the van. |

I have clamps in the middle of my door no problem. I use the gutter mount. All I can think of, you got the wrong mounts! And just a few days ago I moved the rack forward , to give more space with the sun roof. So the towers are at the front of the door, and no problems! _________________ 1987 syncro westy tin top sun roof , GW2.3, rear locker, decoupler, Gary Lee tire rack & winch mount, lift, south african grill, big brakes , rhein alloy ,15 BFG AT, Fiamma 10 foot awning ,140 watt rear 85 watt front solar , mppt, truckfridge, automatic fire extinguishing system, tencent oil cooler, And a RMW SS exhaust! - 1971 bug convertible 1776 engine- 2010 Subaru turbo - 1993 Toyota 4x4 truck - 1999 Harley 95 CI, big bore, Andrews cams . What do y'all put up on them racks most of the time?
I love the look, but I'm not sure how useful it would be. Seems like getting up to them would be a big PITA... _________________ All-grain homebrewer with a 1990 Vanagon Carat. |

So a tin top 2wd basket wouldn't work? _________________ Although I got a funny message from the Porsche guys, it read, "what a mighty ship that you must sail"

A factory basket would work, but they're rare.
All tin tops are the same roof profile, 2wd, 4wd, or 3wd.
I do like to put things up top, and I like to have the ability to expand up. Most importantly, I need a place for my horse skull! : )
Adding off roading lights would also make for a mean look.
I was successful in getting the bars to not agressively interfere with the door.
One side still touches the gasket a bit on closing, but so long as I can swing the door and it closes.... it works. |

I find them useful but then again I'm kind of a turtle; I carry my home on my back. I have a smaller yakima rack on front driver side. I access it by standing on the wheel well. In the back I have the wider yakima warrior. I access this by either standing on the rear bumber (I have it pretty much as far back as can be), on a tire or I do this thing where I actually climb up onto the roof via driver door, wheel well, standing on the very end of dash and hoisting myself up. It's actually easy for me to do but I'm rather petite.
What I carry up there for the most part is dirty/wet/sandy/sporty kind of stuff I don't want inside or things that I don't use that often. Cabin space is too precious to have it filled with the infrequently used possessions. Then again, if I never use it and it's giving me sucky gas mileage, maybe it's time to visit the nearest goodwill... _________________ 1987.5 wolfsburg hardtop; 2.1
