When reading the VIN chart at http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/chassisdating.php
for a nine digit VIN, ignore the 2nd digit.
217 001 123 is after 247 001 122
Look for 237045719 in the part of the chart with 217 xxx xxx
The second digit of the 9- digit VIN is the model number.
All buses in the same model year were numbered sequentially as they came off the line, not separate sequences for the different models.

FWIW, this is correct when the VIN is a 9- digit number.
If it was a seven digit VIN, like 1165141, or a 6 digit VIN, like 226225, they had not yet put the type/model/ years into the VIN number.
In that case, the 3rd digit being 6 means nothing special.
It is sequential, 226225 is the 226225th VW bus made. The next bus, whatever model, is 226226.
The nine digit VIN started for the 1965 model year. Then the first three digits told you the type/model/model-year.
So you can tell that a VW with VIN 256 xxx xxx is a bus, deluxe, 1966 model year. 256141273 is the 141273rd bus made in the 1966 model year.
when they started the 1967 model year, it would be VIN 2X7 000 001. I put x as the second digit because I don't know the model. The second 67 bus would have the last 6 digits of the VIN 000 002, regardless of model.
In the production tables, all 1965 and later 9 digit VINs are listed as starting with 21, which can be confusing for people who are looking up a VIN for a non panel van.
If a VW bus has an eight digit VIN, it will be like 20-115123, the 20- is a prefix that means it is a type 2 - a bus. The 20- prefix was dropped at the beginning of the 1956 calendar year.
Evidently bugs had a 1- prefix on the VIN through the end of 1955 calendar year. |

| Oh ya I get it. Now thanks for setting me straight on HOW to read a vin correctly. pick one up for 3700 yesterday from El Paso. I have a 70 bay I'm fire selling if you know any one. Has new motor and trans. 100% rust free 5500 firm it's a 8 seater. It has to go. I been wanting a split for a while now all resources will go to it. |

VINs are pretty complex...I still have to settle in and say 'ok, lets read a VIN' before I do it.
Let's see pics of the kombi...don't see many of those in later year splits. |

Third digit - Model year
Forth to end - serialised running number denoting production sequence |

Sweet huh
Y no back up lights Everett. I thought all 67s had them. Hopefully it's not rusted bad. Main thing is it has all the windows. I already got the new trans for it and 944 brakes all around. I got a motor also. I think ill do ok pn this one |

You may not have a dual master cylinder either. Might want to check before setting up to do your brake upgrade. |

It was the 'base' model of the passenger bus. Seats in the back, but either no interior panels or plain gray panels, rather than the two-tone. Also were single color exteriors (may have been a discussion recently about rare two-tone kombis?).
Passenger bus models went, in ascending order: Kombi, Standard, Deluxe.
Other parts of the world also use 'Kombi' as a generic term for all busses |
