Has anyone seen one of these switchs burst like this? Was there something I could have done? This part is only a little over a year old with maybe 5 or 6 hour on it. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance Jeff

I've seen some pretty crappy switches in recent years but never known one to do anything like that before! I don't recognize that particular switch, is that a VW part with that custom mount job you have?

Well this is mounted on a sandrail with aftermarket pedals. So there was no spot for the switch on the master cly. But the switch I got from the parts store was for a 65 beetle.

I recently had the oil pressure switch in my Jeep do the same thing.

If this kind of failure happened on a new car, there would be a federal recall on the part. This can lead to total brake failure.

Why are aftermarket suppliers not held to the same standard?

Wowsers, I've never seen anything like that before either. Since you say the parts store gave you one for a '65 Beetle and it fit ok, try finding the same '65 switch from a reputable vintage VW parts supplier. The quality of the switch might be better. If your next one blows out, then I would suspect the custom pedal assembly and the master cylinder as a cause.

I think I will go with a pedal mounted switch when the time comes. I kinda have trust issues now lol.

When you say "pedal mounted" I assume you mean a mechanical switch and not a hydraulic one correct? In a sandrail that would be the only way to go in my opinion. The hydraulic ones that VW used seem like one of the worst automotive ideas ever. There was a somewhat recent recall on a lot of Ford truck for a similar problem. The switch on the Fords inst to turn on the brake lights but to deactivate the cruise control. Seen a lot of those leak but never fail like that one in the pic, wow. Either you have brake pressures far exceeding the stock VW pressures or that one had a serious defect from the factory.

Sand rails don't need brake lights Wink

There isn't enough money in the game to make the problem worth solving to the politicians and lawyers.
