|
|
I picked up this '59 a couple months ago from a guy who started the the project a decade ago and let it sit for the last 8 years. It's all stripped and ready to head in for paint and body in a week or two, and then I can start putting it back together!
It is already slammed and has bags front and rear with a new tank and compressors.
Found out that while the pan is a 59, the body is a 61. The pans look like they were replaced and the body is solid. There is absolutely no rust and the luggage and battery trays look perfect! The pass side door has been replaced, and at least the front fenders as well.
The door handles have been shaved.
It came with pretty much everything I need except for the interior.
The tranny is good according to the PO, as is the 1915 with dual weber 44s that was supposedly rebuilt a few months before it was parked 8 years ago. We shall see...
Anyhow, here are some pics:
Unfortunately, the spare tire well was cut (along with the body ID tag to make room for the front bag-shitty, but it was the only drawback...

Cool ride, looks like the start of a fun project. One question though, are you sure about it being a 59? Either its been clipped in the front, or there is a possibility that its actually a 61. _________________ WANTED: Henry Veale Santa Rosa plate frames

no way this is a 59, or even a 60, definately a 61 or later |
Looks like a 61 front clip, if not the entire body. Note the hood prop in the pic. 62 went to hood springs. Rear apron is a not an H-apron as on a 59, but that could have been replaced, as well. By the looks of it, I'd say it's a 61 body on a 59 pan, if it's titled as a 59. |

OK, so the consensus is that its a 61 body I guess... It is titled as a 59 so the pan definitely is, but with the body ID plate missing there's no way for me to be sure what year it is. I'm not an expert in telling the differences in years, so I appreciate the help. How can I tell? Please educate me. |

Nice find, looks solid with some cool stuff done to it already. Enjoy and keep us posted on progress! _________________ BarryL wrote:

In 61 they redisigned the lower trunk area behind the front apron where the brake reservior is. 61 also recieved a new redesigned gas tank. Here is a pic of a 61....
Here is what a 59 looks like....

That's a nice car. If you put smaller tires you would lay frame. But with the blinkers you should make your own that goes where the chrome incert is below the headlight. I've seen it on a couple bugs rolling around in Vegas and it's a hella clean look |

bummer... I thought I had a 59. Oh well, at least it's still an early one. It's not going to be at all original anyway, so I guess it's not that important,
stale air, thanks for the pictures.
sccbugger, I've seen the turn signals behind the horn grills before and it does look pretty clean. The front tires are 145s and rears are 165s. those are the only things in the way of it laying frame. I'm putting 135s on the front and I'm not sure about the rears yet... |

Did some work on the seats. I got a hold of some nice 65 fronts and some mismatched rears, tore em down, hit em with the soda blaster and some primer. Before...
...and after

Thanks! I've been trying. I don't want to get overwhelmed or the project to go stagnant so I've been doing a little bit every weekend. I want to drive it so bad!

It doesn't have a name, just a code. I was going for a copper-ish reddish orange sorta color and I found the perfect one! |

Today: cleaned up and painted pedal assembly, turn signal assembly, shifter, steering tube and shaft, installed everything and a new steering damper. Installed center console/gauge cluster along with gauges and switches for the bags.
