PostPosted: Fri Apr 22, 2011 4:56 pm    Post subject: New guy, just bought a 65 in Lake Havasu Reply with quote

Been looking for a pre 67 for a few weeks now and finally found a solid one, of course its half way across the country but I have good friends in Havasu that looked it over and bought it for me. Once I find a cheap reliable shipper ( or a plane ticket ) I will have it.

I want a roof rack, rear window blinds, big mud flaps and a narrowed beam in the front end. I am debating on static or air suspension, I have everything to bag it minus valves I think but I've never bagged a bug so anyone that has have any info / pointers / pics of what you need to build to make these lay out? Or if they have bracket kits available? Also any other suggestions greatly appreciated, this is my first air cooled vw and I'm excited to have another old car.

Also, I am looking for a window crank knob, locks for the vent windows, and a grab handle for the dash.

Very nice, very clean.

As a stock guy, I'm obligated to ASK that you not slam it.

It's your car, do what you will and enjoy it.

I have a 65 too, not anywhere as good looking as yours though. Hopefully one day it will be.

I second that, just leave it alone, it's freakin' nice, love it the way it is. if you want to "bag" something, get a patina'd bug

The car is 1945 miles and thus far the cheapest I can have the car shipped for is 700, just so happens to be enclosed. I can probably get two 1 way airline tickets for my brother and I and drive it back for less then 400, but then of course there is the risk of something happening and not being able to get parts. What do you guys think?

$700 is a KILLER price on shipping eric.. thats what ive seen for prices from much closer to us...

personally, for $400 for gas and plane tickets.. id pay the extra $300 to avoid the risks.. especially since you already own the car and dont need to look it over/argue price.. its already yours LOL.. not to mention 1-3 days of driving 65mph or so and being passed, downshifting up hills, etc..

too bad there isnt a ragtop for sale close to yours, i could get another car on the transport and maybe save a lil money for both of us!

Yea, I think 700 is a pretty fare rate. Trying to get the guy down another 50 bucks and getting him a shipment back to lake havasu, Crash has 4 cars he needs to ship down that way and for 650 each way if the guy is headed back that way he might do alright.

Then again, if he has a big enough trailer he can take all 4 for 650 each and make out gooood

Lower it if you want, but seriously air bags and mud flaps are gay.

I say leave it alone.

Ask the guys that did what you are going to do and see if the could do it over and return it back to stock, would they. You can never go wrong with stock. It wouldnt have made it 46 years being slammed and narrowed.

are you getting door to door quotes? alot of times carriers have better pricing if you take it to their terminal and pickat one also. you can also see if they can ship it to a major city near you for less money, then drive a few hundred miles to pick it up,.

That's a nice clean '65. Don't do anything to it that can't be undone. Keep the original beam and buy a used one to chop up and narrow.

I would have a hard time modifying it, but the stock would wear out quick on me and I would be more happy to lower it and get a big motor. But that's me. Also, I'd look into flying out and visit my brother for a day and then rent a U'haul truck with trailer and drive it back one way. Shouldn't cost more that the shipping and if so, you spent time with family.

I Haven't actually called any shippers yet I am getting bids on uship.com, I was a shipper on there a few years ago and had good luck so trying that route for now and I will likely call around a bit on Monday if I don't get something locked down by then.

For those that aren't into modifying their cars, different strokes for different folks. I didn't buy a bug to take to the elitist car shows and have pissing contests over GERMAN vs NON-GERMAN aftermarket parts etc. I bought a 62 Mary Kay Car 4 years ago with 32k miles on it from the MK foundation with sweet as patina and bagged it w. suicide doors, had a blast but sold it to buy a house. I don't like stock, if I did I would just drive a new car around.

The air suspension cars I've seen on this site don't look great as far as the setups go so I will likely go with one of these guys that makes a narrowed aftermarket beam to lower the car static and drive it like that, but who knows I change my mind a lot. These cars sure look great laid out.

I will probably do what Joey suggested so when I do go to sell it I can put it back to stock for the right buyer. What I would like is to find one of those window mounted air conditioner units and a cool deck lid rack. What are the odds of finding either of those?

I would go with Joey's suggestions also. I have already done that for my own. It's up to how you feel happy with what you have.

I'm having a hard time trying to figure out what I NEED to buy to lower this car the right way. There are soo many options on this site for beam replacements etc its starting to hurt my head.

I'm thinking I want to go 4" Narrowed w/ shock towers, I want to run stock wheels so that should be enough correct? Also do I need drop spindles to maintain the correct geometry? Also do I need a flip kit for same reason? And the only thing I found for the rear is a plate to correct toe, right?
