Hi, I want to install this oil temp sensor on my engine, on the blank plate at the bottom of the case.
Can anybody here tell me what kind of tap I need to cut those threads ?
Outside diameter of the threads is just over 10mm.

Are the threads SAE or Metric.....

What is exact thread count and what is exact diameter of threads?

They make gauges to tell you all this!

Not to hijack this thread, but is the 2-bolt plate a "good" place to mount the oil temp sender?

Regardless of the work required to do so, is there a "better" place to install the oil temp sender?

Thanks, Dan

Glenn, got to thinking about my build and with the sump on the bottom, would it be better to drill/tap the side casting and insert my sensor there? I'll have a skid plate protecting that area when finished.

Don't know the thread count....
I have a M10x1.25 tap, drilled and tapped a hole in a piece of angle iron with it, but than didn't work...
I think it would have to be a M10x1.0, but am not sure.

And yes, I know there a gauges for this, but it would be easier for me to just be able to buy the right tap, instead of buying the gauges ( which in all likelihood will never need again), and then buy the right tap.

It appears to me, that the sensor has tapered threads. Like 1/8" NPT.
Who is the sensor manufacturer?

Dan, You can tap the sump. But you'll likely get different temp readings than from the T3 sump plate.

I've tried mounting the sensor in the oil filter bracket, oil relief plug and finally in the steel plate talked about here. Plate mounting is the strongest as it's steel and the easier to get to if you have to remove / install. Oil temp readings are the same at all locations.

Here's the size, at least that is what mine is:

VDO-323-057 - 323057 - 300F DEGREE OIL TEMPERATURE SENDER / SENDING UNIT 1/8-27 NPT

I can't remember where I bought mine from, but I'm running this exact oil temp sender and location. I purchased it already drilled and tapped.

Here is one from Appletree Automotive:

May as well grab the correct drill for the 1/8" NPT from amazon also.

Clamp the plate to a board, eg. 2x4 when drilling to prevent mishap when drill bit bites going thru the plate. Find your enter and center punch it.

I did my drilling in 3-steps w/ cutting fluid. Didn't want to screw up and have to purchase another plate.

How are these senders connected electrically to the gauge?

Don't tap too deep, pipe taps are tapered, if you go too deep it will not seal, try 4-5 turns then check with sender, you want a few threads left above the plate on the sender. 3-4 turns on pipe threads is the min.

This is how i ran the oil temp wire. I had it previously going to my oil filter adapter so i just continued it along the full-flow lines (insulated for lines) under engine to sender.

If you look closely you'll see that i use a small "L" shape bracket attachment to engine block.

My sender uses the spade connector.
