|
|
I just bought a '91 Vanagon dual cab with a 5 speed gearbox, I would like to know if any one has used the quick shift kit that gene Berg makes for this model, and how well it works.
Mine shifts ok but its a bit like stiring poridge, the shifter has a lot of movement.
thanks _________________ FAHRVERGNUGEN;

I've never used that kit. If your shifting is sloppy it is more than likely worn bushings in your shift linkage. I'd fix the stock system (may not be very expensive) than see how it feels. I think you'll find it satisfactory, and it will save you some money. _________________ My Art:

Just found this old post, thought I would answer my own question.
I ended up fitting a Berg quick shift kit and it does help a lot, reduces the throw by 20% to 30% and doesn't make it any harder to move the stick at all, all my bushes were in good condition I just re-lubed everything and its great.
I have since ordered 2 more kits from Bergs, fitted them to other vans and again owners are very pleased with the results. _________________ FAHRVERGNUGEN;

Geez it's been a few years but the black steel bushing is your drill guide. Raise the pivot point on the shift lever. Very simple geometry. Really easy and one of the best mods that can be done. _________________

Wrong kit, you don't need the shifter extention. You only need the 6790 easy shift riser kit. |

Why?
It moves the knob closer to you so you do not need to reach for it, so it says. _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

I personally would not entertain these, Ive seen way too many sticks snapping with this type of kit and you dont want that in busy traffic, I would repair the stock shifter, |

Our shifters are already several feet long and more length wouldn't really be a advantage. The offset shift extension from VC or angled one from GoWesty would be better if you think you need a extension.
Remember Berg raced bugs so his extension(along with almost all of his products) is more for bugs, ghias, and type 3s with their short shifters. |

Opinions, opinions......
I will decide after I get a few miles on my stick shift van.
Although, I must add the automatic that I have had for years sure feels really long.
I only drove my stick shift van a short while before parking it as it was not suitable for a lot of driving until the overhaul was finished.
So I will wait..... _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

A Quick shift kit won't break the shifter if it is maintained correctly, Gorrilla gear changes will, poor linkage adjustment does, jammed selectors in the gearbox will, but you realy need to give it a reef!!
I used the kit without the extention, shifter is in the perfect spot for me. _________________ FAHRVERGNUGEN;
