Does anyone know if a new number can be punched into an engine block
If so how is it be done?
Why the h-ll would I want to do that? Simple because I know the original engine number was when the car was delivered. I'm sure that engine is scrapped and I'm looking for a close matching engine block but the idea that one could file down a number and punch in another is tempting.
Would be fun to see if this can be done |

Re-numbering another case to match is generally frowned upon. You might be up front about what was done, but what about the next person who buys your car? An exception might be if you found a genuine replacement case marked KD, or with other known remanufacturing symbols, and propagated the old engine number on it instead.
As for the punches, the metric size & correct font can be found with some patience. I would do a test punch on a scrap case to gauge how hard to hit the punches. The factory wasn't too picky on this aspect though. IIRC I have a case where a "4" in the middle of an engine number is double-punched.....once upside down, and a second time (deeper!) right side up! _________________ "Criticism comes easier than Craftsmanship"

I know this sort of thing has been brought up elsewhere, but from my understanding it's the only reason the VW Siftung Museum won't give out engine numbers anymore, unless you send them the one that you have. Then, they just confirm that it was original to the car. For me, they sent a second letter to go with the birth certificate to say that specific numbered engine was correct. |

why? I thought that people were into restoring these cars? sounds like a restoration type thing to me. a savvy buyer can always check the date stamping on the case to verify that the engine was cast at the same time period that the number indicates. the original engine doesn't seem to affect the values of VWs the way it does for porsches. _________________ .

I don't think it sounds like a restoration thing at all. Sounds like a thing to make someone else think its the original engine when it really isn't to me. And yes, I would think that people in general might pay more for something with the original engine. _________________ Yet another person with a '66 project: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=526418 |

Obviously the opinion varies wether this is acepptable or not. If I would do it I would not hide it for the next byer.
I think that I just might try to find a case as close to the original as possible and make sure that all parts are 100% correct for the time the car was built |
