Hey Samba peeps. I have a question about parts interchange I hope someone can help me with.
Here's the deal.
I converted the brakes on my '59 beetle about 15 years ago to discs up front and Type 3's in the rear. In all these years I've always had some problems with the rear axle seals leaking.
I've taken a couple shots at fixing this over the years with *some* improvements, but it still leaks quite a bit on longer trips. About 5 years ago I decided to take another swing at it and adapted and installed oil slingers onto the early type 3 drum - but the car still makes a mess of the inside of the wheel/tire on longer driving trips.
This hasn't been too big of an issue for me in the past since I am not doing many long drives. However, this next summer I've signed up for a "drag-and-drive" event in the midwest. I expect I'll be putting a good 1000 miles on the car in a week with daily drives of 150+ miles between drag-strips, so I need to get this fixed.
Here's my question:
I am still using the '58-'64 style bearing caps. The backing plates I am using have provisions for the "weep hole" style of bearing cap which lets any oil that gets past the seal out the rear of the backing plate.
So - Do I need to use a bearing cap with the provisions for the weep-hole (65/66?) and ditch the slingers, or since the '58-'64 style bearing cap is being used, I should keep the slingers and all should work as expected assuming it's all installed correctly.
There may have been other factors contributing to my current leaking situation (misassembly with using paper gaskets, worn spacers) but I'd like to rule out a parts mismatch with the older style "slinger" bearing cap, and a later style "weep hole" backing plate as the culprit.
Thanks

I dont have a definitive answer, but logic would dictate that using type 3 brakes includes all the parts. Why arent you using the type 3 bearing caps? |

Dunno. Sometimes I don't know why I did something last week - let alone 15 years ago.
I was able to score several sets of type 3 backing plates at swapmeets over the years. I pieced it together eventually by getting the right springs, shoes, other brake hardware and early type 3 drums with the "nose" machined down 5/8 or so.
I didn't realize there were differences in the bearing cap designs until just a few days ago - hence my question. The more I look at this, the less I think it matters. The "sealing business" is between the cap and the axle casting / bearing holder. The backing plate it just there sandwiched between them and uses the big o-ring to seal the whole mess.
Seems like either slinger design could potentially work. |
