I don't know what came stock as for radio's in the vanagons. When I bought mine it had a blaupunkt radio that has several modes, one includes shortwave. All I know is it is one of the best tuners I have ever had, picks up everything on AM and FM. I can even tune in Radio Sweden and several channels from Asia on the other bands. The short wave stuff works best in the early morning or late at night. Any idea on what I have? Could it be stock?
*edit* I was afraid this would come across as a post jacking so I moved it.
This is it>>
Some notes I found:
Principle Super-Heterodyne (Super in general); IF-Freq 460/10700 kHz
Tuned circuits= 7 AM circuit(s) 8 FM-circuit(s)
Wave bands= Broadcast, Long Wave, Short Wave plus FM.
I am wondering what would be the best antenea to apply to this radio for the best performance? _________________ I have never owned a VW I didn't like, but there have been a few Fords and Chevy's.

I googled the model # shown in your image. Maybe came from a Porsche?

In some ways I'd prefer a great tuner to a CD player unit.

I read somewhere that the Porsche came equiped with these but wasn't sure what else might.
I would like to find an antenea that would be suitable for the multiband performance. I want to install it as a secondary radio in my van so the OEM antenea will be otherwise employeed. aside from using a splitter that I have what are the best options to go with? I am open to suggestions. _________________ I have never owned a VW I didn't like, but there have been a few Fords and Chevy's.

Nice radio! I have a 4 band Becker, similar to Blaupunkt. Mine is a Saudi spec radio from a grey market mercedes from the 80's. I once tried a creative antenna (TV style) which was horrible. The best one I've had is a simple solid FM length universal car antenna.
Do you know how to tune the receiver to optimize reception with any given antenna? There should be a little hole in the metal body of the radio (behind the faceplate) with an antenna symbol stamped next to it. With a small (jewler's) flathead screwdriver you can go in and tune the antenna. Find a weak AM station (at night) and turn the screw back and forth until the signal is at it's strongest.
Sounds like it's working fine for you though.
BTW, I've never heard anything on long wave- and don't expect to. But it is fun to have shortwave.
If you decide to part with it, PM me- _________________ Sage

there is a formula for the length of an antenna based on wavelength - I forget what it is... may be 1/4 and/or 1/2 of the wavelength -- probably on the web somewhere
figure out the wavelength for the mid-point of the frequency ranges you want to tune in _________________ 1986 2.1L Westy 2wd Auto Trans. |
