hey guys! great forum.
heres my 74. going to go with the rally theme, probably not going to enter it in any stage rallys, but more rallycross events.
when I got her, the front end was toast, ball joints/tie rods/ ect... the previous owner install some adjust a struts and lowered it about 2.5"..
so I purchased some oem strut bodies, topline rally springs, kyb strut inserts, and complete front end rebuild kit.
just waiting on my wheels/ other parts to come back from powdercoating, then I can start assembling it!
heres a shot the first day I brought her home. and started teardown

Wellguys. Im still waiting for parts to come in, then i can measure for tires
What do u guys think...205/70-15, or 215/75-15 if they'll fit. Will get dedicated rally wheels later on., as soon as i install the front end/tires, u will recieve pics.
Also anybody know of a plain jane aluminum racing style dash that i can rig up? _________________ --74 superbeetle |

I would probably go with the 215s since they are a tad taller. Here is a good rally cross build thread.

For a dash this could work, or just get some sheet metal and make your own. Check the rules some times removing the factory dash bumps you up several classes.

Here is one in fiberglass for a super. The stock over lay that does the whole dash and looks original is well over 400 bucks.

For tires I think I'd lean to the ATs to have a little more rubber on the road. _________________ I have a German look bug, it was built in Germany and looks like it.

Good idea! I did that with mine too. They just felt too wimpy to hold up to any real hard driving. Keep up the build!

I prepare my comp bodies with stitch welding but - sorry!! - I don't think seam welding is a good idea for the steel sandwich lower control arms... I have found they are subject to a little twist - especially with long travel suspension (and I would imagine, poly bushes) that you will be setting up for an off-bitumen vehicle.
Have you seen the Salzburg rally Beetles from the early '70s? maybe you could build a cosmetic replica - I know I'd like to! |
