Hi,
I bought this type 3 in California and I'm hoping you experts can help me with information regarding the rebuild. First problem I am addressing: this car has type 1 link-pin front end with type 2 trailing arms (2 and 1/2 inches longer and 1 inch out than stock type 1). It has front type 2 knuckles and brake drums. Also, rack-and-pinion steering... Previous owner installed rack-and-pinion and front axle incorrectly- car was undriveable. Since retiring a few years ago and moving to Baja Mexico to ride my dirt bikes and off-road cars, I found an excellent off-road fabrication shop in the town here. I will be posting pictures of the build- they are fabbing a complete sub-frame to hold the front axle which is moved 12 inches forward of the stock location. Car also has 3x3 rear trailing arms. Hopefully, as I post the pictures of the rebuild as things progress, I get benefit from any recommendations, experiences, etc., that you may have regarding this type of vehicle...!

Looks cool! I assume you've seen the Type 3 Truck thread, for something like this but in more northern climes. What kind of engine does it have in it? _________________ A '68 fastback owner, and maybe a driver |

| Im not sure on engine, but think its the stock 2 carb .It runs great. My first work is to make it drive well off road.As it has 10 inch travel front end. When I got the car you could only use 3 inches of travel, and the rack would only turn the front wheels half way.Now that is fixed,so test drive is next.We are having trouble to bleed the brakes,so I may need to get master cylinder.I will post more pictures soon. Are type 2 brake drums the same as type 3 brake drums(5 lug) |

It will likely have Type 2 CV's, Type 4 CV's (same bolt pattern), or 930 CV's. Depending on what CV joints it has, it will have axles to match. With a bus trans, the axles will be 19-1/4" long, with a bug trans, they'll be 18-3/4" with the 3x3's. If it has VW CV's (T2 or T4), the axles will have 33 splines. If 930 CV's, they'll have 28 splines.
Most guys run aftermarket longer front trailing arms with a Type 1 beam, rather than bus ones. I've never see that set-up you have. Interesting. _________________ KaddieShack.com - Kadron Carburetor Specialists, VW Parts and Accessories

| Yes your right, the guys here in baja.Have not ever seen type 2 trailing arms, spindles, brake drums on type 1 front beam. They are 2 and a half longer, one inch out then stock. Also type 2 spindle rises car up 3 inches. The problem they had was streeing arms on spindles are on bottom.Thats where they went wrong,so we moved str arms on top of spindle. Also moved rack up to top beam. Now I need to get pair fox 8.5 travel front shocks. |
