Does anyone know the value of the burnt transistor on the idle control unit??
Is it replaceable

Yes, it is replaceable with a standard off the shelf part. I have replaced a few over the years in B version ICUs. I will look for the replacement number and post it if I find it.

Mark, thanks
the warm weather driving is ok but If it's not repaired before winter it's going to really suck.

The replacement for the transistor that commonly fails in the B version of the 2.1 ICU is an NTE 185 replacement part.
Here is the earliest instance I know of where a Vanagon owner fixed this problem and shared the info on the web. 15 years ago

Yes, and make sure all connections are seated in the plastic relay holder.
I only use the D series units from late models...that goes for ECUs too. |

D will interchange with a B relay, and I have all late model D's in my 87 van. |

Yes, they did, when you could still get them new. Might be some around somewhere still. They are not actually relays, much more than that inside, but in a plastic case that looks like a relay and with relay style connectors.
My locals yards consider them relays, so $7 when I find one not already gone.

one of the parts suppliers like Van Cafe has them listed for $625 ,Samba members have offered them to me for $245.
If the weather is constant you can run without one, but it you have a change of season or A/C it helps.
It's 108 degrees here today and my A/C died, it popped the low pressure line, I guess the 25 years caught up with it. |
