78 that PO converted to a carburetor.
Since there are no smog tests here and I don't have FI anymore, what sensors do I need for my rebuild?
Oil pressure, voltage, oil temp mechanical, fuel level...is that it?
No O2, EGR, nothing like that, right?
Any common add-ons?
Anything useful for monitoring proper carb performance?
I hope to go back to fuel injection someday, but first step is to get her running!
Thanks in advance!

Oh yeah, what is the red or green light that blinks occasionally that I read about? It has something to do with the health of the engine I recall. Do I need that sender? _________________ 1978 Westy

Pink?
I know there's:
indicators = green
High beam = blue
Alternator = red
Oil pressure = red
Dual circuit brake failure = ...I've heard they were red but mine is yellow now. _________________ Vehicle: 1975 Special order delivery walkthrough panel based pop-top camper (LCA / Sunliner). Motor: Nippon 1.8L Single port Wasserboxer, Transmission: 3 rib 002. |

LOL...Pink lights are on my short list of dream mods.
In the mean time, I think the light I remembered reading about had to have been the oil pressure. Further, it looks like CAT and EGR weren't even hooked up to anything on Canadian models. If Canadians are not worried about it, it must be for CA emissions, therefore, not an immediate concern.
Back on track, did I cover the required sensors? _________________ 1978 Westy

You do need and should have a thermostat
EGR counter box was connected to the speedo cable under the driver side kick panel _________________ V.W.owner since 1967 |

I meant green and fuchia lights. If you don't have those look for the one that looks like a whale o' tale.
You need all your factory lights that came with your year. Look it up here:

you only need EGR if you are running stock smog. It had a sole purpose which was to remind the user that they needed to take it in to check the EGR valve and filter for operation. _________________

The EGR counter box has the cable that goes to the front Driver side wheel. the other end of the cable from the counter box then goes to the speedometer head.
So does your speedometer work?
you can use the egr light as a service indicator since it turns the light on @ 15k and 30k intervals
if you remove the box you must then install a longer cable from a 1972-1974 type2. _________________ V.W.owner since 1967 |
